I was actually lucky... the transom was so bad it was like mush, which made for an easy removal. Its the grinding out this old glass and resin that they caked in everywhere thats going to keep me busy for dayyyys. I had to take a break from it and cut the new transom just beacuse I wanted to feel like I was actually accomplishing something! Gl on yours!

I see you are off to a good start. Cradle looks great! Sure wish I had a garage for my resto. I guess we all just have to deal with the hand we are dealt. Keep up the good work!

Hi Den,
I would like to come aboard and watch what sounds like an awesome build...only one teensy tiny thing...Where are all of you pics?
I want to see the awesome work you are doing, but I guess you are shuffling your Photobucket pics around...that breaks all the links, you will have to go back and edit each post you have pics in and re-post them...
Cya soon and best regards,

Ok! I THINK the pics should be fixed now... :)

Still making a little progress, taking advantage of the 60+ degree weather here this weekend. Most of the grinding is done, except for the sides. The transom and center stringer are in (still need to be glassed etc..). Got my first try at PB, awesome stuff! The whole fiberglassing thing is not as nearly as intimidating as it seemed to me the first day I found these forums :) TY iBoats!

The legendary PB i have read so much about...

Re: My project, 74 Ebbtide

Thank you for fixing the pics, now I can truly enjoy your quality work...the guys are right, that is one of the nicest hull cradles...and the boat ain't half bad either...:p;)

Really, you are doing some very nice work and you are going to end up with a vessel you will be proud to own and have a ton of fun in...

PB is some great stuff, I agree...

I noticed where you have your cap hanging, I would make the suggestion that you should run a piece of lumber across the consoles to keep them from sagging and possibly throwing the cap out of whack...if you don't want to screw into it, just use a couple of C-clamps...

Happy Monday!

Yes and thanks for the suggestion that I will use in the future! I should have mentioned the cap didn't hang there long. The cap and trailer are actually behind the garage now waiting thier turn :) I have spent hours browsing your thread GT, one of my favs!

Still at it! Took advantage of the 70 degree weather this weekend and patched some holes and week spots... got the transom glassed in and the middle stringer bedded in. Its starting to become fun!

Just curious what your exact PB Recipe turned out to be. Posting it would be helpful for others in the future. Measurements, Temps and "Kick" times too!!!

Hi Den...just now getting around to seeing your thread...great work so far...but if we can't see it in pics...it didn't happen :)

I knew that was coming... :) and so will the pics.

I used your recipe Wog.. printed out and kept in my "boat binder" :) Which is in the garage so .. off the top of my head, 1 qt resin, 1 qt cabosil and 1/4 cup chopped strand.
My first batch (the transom) I used 10 ml of the hardner and the temp was in the lower to mid 60's .. it eventually hardened over night. So in the batches that succeeded I doubled the hardner and it kicked in 20, 30 mins or so ? I didnt time anything so maybe longer but it set up perfectly for bedding the stringer and patching holes and week spots. That PB stuff is awesome and I was looking everywhere for places to use it :) The only thing that surprised me was that it takes a bit to get the cabosil mixed in but once it takes all is good.

Yep, with lower temps a 2% ratio on the hardener is perfect as you found out. The pics show the PB to be about like Mayonaise and that's how I like it. Sometimes a little thicker for vertical applications so it doesn't get to runny. If you tear some strands of CSM into "Hair" and mix that into the PB it will make a structural mix that will fill holes and cracks prior to applying CSM and Cloth over them and it will be Strong as heck. You're doing some nice work. Thanks for documenting and sharing.:thumb:

Just what I spent most of my time doing, filling the 20+ holes in the transom skin, and reenforcing the keal and the areas where my grinder took on a mind of its own... again, I suggest lighting up the inside of the hull and lying underneath it... I was shocked at how much light was shining through.

Re: My project, 74 Ebbtide

Keep up the good work and keep the pics coming! It's funny, my grinder did the same thing to my boat.

I always keep one thing in mind that my father told me a long time ago when it came to fixing things. He simply said, "if it didn't grow that way you can fix it." I like to think of that when I feel I'm about to screw something up (or when my grinder has a mind of it's own).

Great job so far!
