Re: My project boat

Got all of the wiring done today, tested everything and the old interior back in. Ran across a couple of things I need some help on. One is replacing the trim sending unit on a Merc Alpha outdrive. Second is glassing in some wood to the floor of the boat so I can get the new interior design going and mount the hot foot. I have never done either of the items so as many details as possible would be great. Thanks!

Re: My project boat

Why is it things never get done until you do them at least twice. After getting all of the fuel lines redone and in place I bought a new alternator bracket. You might be thinking the two have nothing to do with each other. This is where you would be wrong. The alternator was mounted on the right of the engine as you are facing the front. However, the mount I bought moved the alt to the other side of the engine, right where the water seperator was placed. UGH!!! So after taking the fuel lines and water seperator off the new bracket and alternator was put in place. I must say the new one was much better than the bracket that was on the engine. After two trips to the parts store for the right size belt the alt is in place. OOPS, I forgot to mention I also had to run a new wire to the Battery. Now on to the fuel lines. I got lucky on this one. One of the lines was long and one was short with the same ends on both. I was able to swap the lines with each other and everything cleared. Now all I have to do is fab a new bracket for the water seperator. So much for getting it in the water this weekend.

Re: My project boat

since you haven't updated with the bad news (was at my sisters this weekend, and the engine was out with number 8 rod bearing in lots of pieces). I do have the aluminum wet loggs and the snails and through hull stuff for your boat. I will try and get it all rounded up this weekend and boxed up with a shipping price. the loggs are Hardin marine. they could use a good polishing but are in really good shape otherwise. made it back to california today about 11:30. all flights where non eventfull for a change. Yak at ya latter Kody:cool:

Re: My project boat

Glad to hear the return trip was easy. I sold what was left of the engine to the machine shop and have a guy building me an early 70's 454. Engine parts should be a ton easier to find now. The Gen V was only produced for 2 or 3 years making parts fun to find. Performace part were almost impossible without spending a fortune. At least I will have real heads now...YEA!!!:) The long block should be done next Friday so I can at least get that much of it back in the boat. I also found a good deal on a tunnel ram with two 450cfm carbs and all of the linkage to stick on it. I am looking forward to the new exhaust stuff. I'm going to have to re-route some wires and fuel lines but was planning on that anyway after looking at a few things. Let me know what the shipping is and I will send you a check. Later:D

Re: My project boat

I just had a driveway put in off of the Patio turning it into a carport. Wish I had a garage but don't have enough room to build one and can't close the patio in. :(

Get your priorities straight, knock half the house down.:D
Then build a proper marine garage.

Re: My project boat

After my first visit to my sisters house, I think they would have to knock the neighbors house down to put in a proper garage!

Re: My project boat

I just can't get the neighbors convinced to let me knock part of their house down to build a garage. However, my wife is thinking about letting me close in the patio/carport.:) Haven't got that completely sold yet but it is being thought about.

Re: My project boat

The boat has a new heart as of tonight.:) It is a 468 BBC with a nasty cam and some head work. The plan is to bolt on the old intake and carb for now and search for a tunnel ram set up over the winter.

Well if you must know.....I run Valvoline 20W50 race oil. The pan is only 10qts.:) I have made a fair amount of progress. All that is left to do is put the new crossover pipe and t-stat housing on, make some new braided lines, buy a low mount alt bracket and put the headers on. Then fire it up. I am hoping for good weather on the 28th and 29th as I have those days off and would love to drop it in the water before winter.:D

I have but where I live it's not legal because of the bow seating. The water patrol nailed people this summer for the same thing. Plus my kids said no, they white knuckle the rail everytime i nail the throttle.

Re: My project boat

Got the new motor fired up Sunday afternoon and what do you know.......someone called the cops. It was 5:30pm not midnight. I guess a big block with open headers isn't for everyone. I tried to take it out this evening after work but the water was way to low in the river by my shop. I might try Thursday or Friday. Here are some pics of the finished engine and the family enjoying the boat over the summer.

My kids say that with the tow rope being 75ft long you really don't notice the exhaust noise.

Re: My project boat

Any flames out of the headers :)

Only when the timing slipped from the hold down nut coming loose. A little dot of thread lock and a lock washer fixed that. Raw fuel and hot headers didn't make for a good combo.
