Finally got the deck sealed and nailed down. Kept getting delayed with the cold weather. The aft storage compartments for the fuel tank and batteries are done. Now it's up front to work on the casting deck rebuild. After that it's rod storage, wiring and pasting the berber down. Here's a couple of progress pics...

Nice work, keep the pix coming. Have they tested the storm sirens up there yet? Used to live in Dodge City years ago...they always cranked up the storm sirens pretty close to Easter.

Thanx. Nope on the sirens. Haven't heard nor read anything about them yet, other than we have some new ones. And we are getting into the season.

Re: My Retirement Project

Re: My Retirement Project

Work on the boat has been slow this past month. The warmer weather pulled me outside to work on our landscaping. Most of it is done so back to the shop. Have mystery problems with my camera and I can't download any pics from my files. See 'em, but can't get 'em. So here's what I can pull: Pic 1 is the dry fit of the expanded front casting deck with 2 larger compartments in stead of the original small 1.

Pic 2 is the new Aux Batt/Stereo & storage compartment.

Pic 3 is the same compartment with the stereo secured but not yet wired.

I wanted the stereo mounted on the console but there just wasn't enough room underneath and I didn't want it mounted on top in plain view of everyone so I hid it in here.

The front casting deck is completely finished now. The console still needs the VHF ant put on but I can't do that until my inbound outboard is installed. That should be in another day or two. Same goes for the gunwhale compartments. I want the motor all set to go before I start running more wires.

The 2 rear compartments will get nailed down tomorrow with the lids put on. They are both vented and carpeted with the rear stereo speakers installed. Just have to do some fine tuning on the lids so they sit level.

Hopefully I can move this to the COMPLETED REBUILD section in a few weeks.
I have 2 weeks to wait for my boat registration from state fish & game folks. Then I can get the numbers tacked on and we'll be legal and wet !! :D

I felt that this was going really slow but it's actually only been a little over 4 months. Now too bad for an old land lubber !~!~! ;)

For those of you who haven't done this before, you'll notice in my past couple of posts there are pieces of blue tape on the inside walls of the hull. These mark where the ribs and stringers are. I did this so I would know where to screw the deck down without missing them. Made life a lot easier for me.

Re: My Retirement Project

Very nice, looks like you are getting close to getting wet.

I know what you mean about no room and a stereo, I ended up mounting mine in the side of the con.

This is the hard part of the project, you are close but not there yet.

Nice work murph! Making good progress. I forget...what kind of mill did you end up with to put on the transom? Looks like she will be a sweet fishin and cruising rig.

Re: My Retirement Project

Thanks for the kind words guys. The saga of the outboard is like a suspense novel. I started with a 35hp 65 johnson long/elect/remote from e-bay. After waiting several weeks for delivery it turned out to be a 33hp 62 johnson, no controls, short shaft. Got my money back on that one.
The second outboard was a 28spl elect/long/remote with all of the controls. Seller opened a paypal account at my insistance and got hassled so much he cancelled the sale. Got my money back on that one also.:(
The third outboard is a 25hp 84 rude (with a johnson hood) elect/long/remote with all controls, extra SS steering hardware, etc. Shipped from a boat shop in Montana and comes with a 90 day warranty ! This one is due in today or tomorrow. :) Talk about Murphy's Law . Hopefully the third time is the charm. I just couldn't find a 35hp in the year range I wanted. Thats with checking boat/repair facilities between Denver and Kansas City ! Go figure. I'll have to repaint the rude, but I figured I would that no matter what I bought. If the rig looks new so should the power. I'm really looking forward to seeing the rude hanging off the transom !

I considered that also, but figured it would just be one more thing to bang my knee on !

Looking good Murph! I have been waiting on your progress. Get that darn camera fixed or give us the links to your pics. Your pics certainly give other tinny owners further motivation. Truth be told...your motor stories had me rolling in laughter. I hope this last one works out for you. :p

Yup. Now it is kind of humorus. On the first fraud outboard I was so PO'd I considered driving to Omaha and knocking on this fool's front door. Thankfully the weather wouldn't allow that. Hate to spend years in the grey bar while the boat sits in my shop waitin' for me. By the time I got out, be too old to drag it off of the trailer anywho.

The second one left me wondering why the seller with a great e-bay profile did not have a paypal account after years of seller on line. So maybe his cancelling the sale was a blessing in disguise.

The third one, well, lets just wait and see what happens when we stick it in a tub of water this week. Haven't bought the paint for it. Haven't bought new decals for it. Lets see what happens when we hit the key.

We shall keep ya'll advised.................

Re: My Retirement Project

Figured out my #$%%^%^%@#$%^%##@#$$$% diigital camera. Seems some moron steped on the USB cord and busted the plugin. Damn dog !

So here we go, I hope. The front deck is all but done. Still have to put in the aux battery and nail it down. The rear storage compartments are done. One for the fuel and one for the main battery/extra storage. I even got real inventive and figured out how to secure my aft running light without buying a shoter one. Console is all repainted. Still have to wire up the VHF and put the new windshield on. All 16 speakers are temporarilly wired. Still can't quite get the surround sound I was hoping for though. Maybe on the next boat.

I bought 2 pair of gas shocks for the rear compartment lids. They should be here this week. With this wind here in Kansas I'll be glad I have them especially when it come time to fuel up. Should have the motor slapped on later in the week. Then all I need are the numbers from the state and we're off to the lake for that long awaited shake down cruise. Then we can start repainting the motor. The rude decals arrived today. Look almost as good as they do in the pictures ! We'll have progress pics on that project as well.

My thanks to everyone who contributes to these forums. You folks are the greatest and so is this web site. ;):D:p

Oh yeah, have to put the seats back in as well. dumb dumb.......

Sounds great! Now go and apologize to the dog!! :) Someone put that usb cord in his path!

Surround sound

Did you vent the fuel compartment with vents that promote airflow?

It really looks good.

Yup on the vents. Both aft compartments have both the speaker holes and a round alum vent so air flow should be no problem. You really can't see the vents in these pics as they are on inboard side of both compartments. Also, the wooden frames for both compartments are not flush to the hull. The carpet actually fills a 1/8" gap, that will also help with air flow. The front storage compartment where the aux battery is located has 2 speaker holes with no interior walls to obstruct air flow and again the wooden frame is 1/8" off the hull with carpet filling those gaps. Air flow should be no problem in this area as well. ;)

Yup. Used 2 different kinds. One is put out by Armorall. Used that on all decking. It turned the wood a wierd color but it's all covered by the carpet. The other I don't remember that brand but it was a clear preservative from Walmart which I prefered to the discolored wood which looked dirty. Also left no odor like the Armorall did.

Re: My Retirement Project

Got a couple of seats installed, still have 2 more seat bases to install. Wife keeps wanting me to go to the nursey to get more flowers with her. Tomorrow we're picking up a new britany spaniel from the shelter. One interuption after another. Might get back to the boat tomorrow night. That of course will be after I dig holes for the new flowers, after we wait to see if the new dog is pottie trained or not, after I mow the front yard and fertilize all those little green things, etc etc etc etc. Thankfully, saturday it's just me and the new pooch. Hopefully I can finish up, providing the dog learns how to open the door to the beer locker !

Got my registration from the state. Figured out what 50:1 ratio means. Should have this thing wet one day next week. Now all I have to do is find the lake !

Final pics coming soon. At least thats the plan...............

Good job Murphy, I grabbed a bunch of those gas shocks at work and put them on all my doors, even the livewell, I love them but getting them placed just right is a bear.

I understand the time thing too,2 daughters in track one is a graduating senior and I am working 2 part time jobs at the moment, although the one at my fishing buddies body shop isn't too bad, so I really look forward to my every other Saturday with my boat and some big catfish.

Keep up the good work , you are in the home strestch, trust me, this part never goes fast enough.

Cool beans murph! She looks real good. Can't wait to see a pix of it with power on the transom. Hope you get a good pooch, so you can have a first mate to go fishing with...make sure he/she has boat legs. Letting them hang around with you in and out of the boat is a good way to get them used to it and want to go fishing. Canine first mates are a good asset, specially if your better half doesn't like being on the water...been trying, but still can't seem to teach my Lab how to back the trailer down the ramp.

Do you have any secrets you care to share on installing the shocks ? I ordered 2 pair thinking 1 pair on each aft storage compartment. Now I'm thinking I may be able to use just one shock per lid. (I have four lids).:p

Oh yeah. I'm thinking about a part time gig also. Working in a boat shop would be the ideal spot fer me don't cha know. What's the address ? I really don't a long commute. ;)
