My swirl Painting experiment

I was given a bolt action shotgun that had a stock that was destroyed. The stock was not only in pieces but missing some substantial amount of wood.

I filled the missing areas, used epoxy and even some fiberglass chopped strand mat and re-assembled this ugly beast. Trust me it is strong now!

Yesterday I decided to try a shot at swirl painting. I primed the stock and dipped it and sprayed a bit of clear coat over it. It did not come out too bad and now I have another shotgun to use.

So THAT's how they do that! Very nice!

But you clearly have too much time on your hands.:D

Looks good!
Don't see too many bolt action shot guns these days. Make/model?

Next time you're bored, try mixing up a batch of spotted paint (see if anybody gets that reference).... :D

Ahh, a 16..
Looked a tad on the smaller side to be a 12.
I like 16's. Bit of a PITA to get a good range of factory loads for the 16 (had to run express loads through my Browning A5 last time I went fun shooting with it), but a nice intermediate size.

It will be a closet queen until the grandson gets older or it could become trading fodder too. In short it's destiny has not yet been decided.

Re: My swirl Painting experiment

Actually since it was my first venture.....I did not feel I had enough paint and could have doubled the amount. I uses 4 tiny bottles of testors model paint and probably should have used twice that.

Fast drying enamel is the key. Some people actually use spray paint - sprayed into a cup and poured onto the water.

Now I am eyeing my cheap Chinese air rifle that I have since it has a real ugly wooden stock........ and yes...... I might do a Zombie color theme on that.

Interesting work there bob. I've seen that done with bleached big game skulls too. I think they use actual dip kits. I didn't know you could do it with just a fast drying enamel.

Re: My swirl Painting experiment

I used to do this with vases and planters. The key is oil based paint (the right amount) and water in a bucket large/deep enough to accommodate the item. The key is adding Borax. The mixture is about 1.5 tablespoons per US gallon.

Fill bucket with water and add the Borax
I use a dropper to place the paint into the water
Allow the paint to spread across the top of the water
Dip the item down and up and hang to dry

Use an array of colors but drop them in quickly so the float side to side and not on top of each other
Timing is important
You can twist the item as you insert it and the paint swirls
Go straight up and down and get a different pattern

You could make fishing lures with this!

If you have kids, scouts, that type of thing it's a great activity for them...or for you.

If I could I would dip my boat but actually saw where some guy dipped a VW...used a swimming pool.

Here is a cool "how to" video
