Re: My YAK by CPJ (aka YAK LIGHT)

Probably not enough resin. I just sanded it and it looks about the same.(orange peel is gone though )Its a nice matte finish. One problem though.Even though it was a bit## to pull the cloth of of my plywood, I was still able to.The resin stuck real good to the cloth but didnt stick to the plywood very good.I assume that it was because it wasnt squeaky clean.I might also try roughing it up with some 40 grit paper next time.

That looks awesome... periwinkles aside.. though you'd probably get your wife to go hunting with ya if ya included them :D

I'm betting you lay down cloth and resin it, then lay out your camo cloth when its still tacky and another layer of resin I'll bet it would be stuck just fine... I think it looks great whoo da thunk it.

I hafta say... you cover your boat in that and leave it orange peel ... just spray a clear coat on it and you'll have the best looking camo job i've seen.

Re: My YAK by CPJ (aka YAK LIGHT)

problem is with orange peel is that when I sand it to take the shine off it, the little depresisons on the surface will remain shiny.Im not worried about "peel" though,I have laid on enough coats of polyurethane on various wood working projects
that Im pretty good at it by now.The only differnce is the resin drys quicker.Alot quicker if I use the wimperdink method.(a littles good, alot must be better :D )

That would be polyester also. Have you guys ever worked with epoxy? It's more forgiving as far as mixing and there are different kinds of hardners available for different cure rates. It doesn't stink like hell either. Are you using any fillers?

Polyester is fine and all I just get frustrated with it and prefer to epoxy, costs more though.

CPJ, the boat's lookin' great! Where is it?! :D

when ya waste as much as I do, gotta go with poly :D my boat would have been near 500 dollars if I woulda used epoxy :D

Poly is forgiving and only need one kind of hardener... the more you add the faster it hardens :D

Re: My YAK by CPJ (aka YAK LIGHT)

A little update.I have been busy and not much chance to work on the yak.I did take the plans to work(dont tell the boss!)and got a better grasp on them. They are a little hard to read, but they were free. I am hveing a friend look at the plans to see if he can draw them in autocad. The plan is to then print them on a blueprint size piece of paper.Glue the paper to the wood and then cut them out.Would save alot of time.Plus,if it works, I can email you guys the cad file and you could take it to Kinkos or another copy store that prints blue prints and have them printed. That would save a butt load of time. Will let you know.

Captain Periwinkle

Captain, I may be interested in those plans if you get them made, did I mention I like that boat? It's about to get cold here so I'm trying to get the garage insulated this week otherwise there is no boat for me till Spring. Bought some more epoxy today...

I hear ya calico.... nicer days are endin here as well... suppose to have had our last warm day yesterday... somehow I don't believe this one..since they (weather peeps) can't get much right. WE'll have to see. Might just get it started though but I hate that idea since I will want to finish it... Finally got the truck fixed.... eh... next is to get the ol' camper here and winterized. Man I hate winter.

Re: My YAK by CPJ (aka YAK LIGHT)

Hey all! I hve been going over the plans and have figured almost all of it out.I know how I am going to do the frames. You have to be carefull and look at all of the frames, because there are measurements that apply to all frames that are listed on only one of the frames.Hopefully, before to long my buddy will have the cad drawings done and I can just glue the pattern to the wood and cut it out.As soon as he is done I will let you guys know so that I can send them to you if you like. One BIG FRIKIN PROBLEM is that the measurement for the keelson is not given :( Either that or I am just plain stupid. If any body can see the dimensions on the plan please let me know.Other wise I will fumble through it and post my results later. The keel dimensions arent listed either, but that will be easy enough to work out.

ps wimperdink,I already see the comment on me being stupid,so just shut up!mlm :D

Um Capn'? I checked those plans and found the keelson dimensions in about 2 seconds: 3/4" x 5,3/4" x 10'9" mahogany or oak. Was listed on the bill of materials.

Or am I not understanding your issue??? :)

no you are not.Lets say that you cut the keelson to those specs.each end would be straight.if you look at the boat each end is curved.I dont know what the curve should be.

Re: My YAK by CPJ (aka YAK LIGHT)

I guess I have to agree with Calico... I looked over the plans as well and didnt see much along the lines of measurements and thinking they are requiring a piece of stock at 10' 9" long is an odd size for a mterials list. Gotta get a 12' and cut it down to 10'9"
I also noticed some hand written measurements on around the keelson in the plans... might check those out a lil closer as well.

No I wouldnt call ya stupid... but I might call ya a pansy @ss :D m!m
