Nails lined up in tire

Your opinion please:

Today I notice that the back tire of my truck is pretty low. Upon further inspection I find 3 nails in the tire. They are all in a straight line across the tire and pretty evenly spaced.

I removed the nails to plug the holes. All the nails are the same kind. The nails seem old = they are rusty and all bent in several directions.

Did someone intentionally line nails up on my tire so when I rolled forward the nails would puncture my tire? Did I somehow run over a piece of wood that had 3 nails in it that all broke out of the wood when the nails embedded in the tire?

Is there another theory?

Thanks.

Maybe you ran over a nail gun strip and the glue just disentigrated after a few miles.

i would think that if some one wanted to punture you tire they could think ok easer ways to do iy than bent rusty nails ................. it was probably just a accedent

Drowned Rat - good theory except they were twisted nails. I've never seen those on a strip - doesn't mean they don't exist though.

ne7800 - I really want to believe that it was some sort of accident. I was sure it was done deliberately until I pulled the nails out and saw they were rusty and bent, so maybe I'm just trying to get over my initial thoughts.

Frustrating...

I've seen those twisted nails on strips, but it's far more likely that you just ran over a piece of wood with them and because of their twist, once imbedded in the tire, they were more firmly seated there than in the wood and likely pulled loose from the wood.

I would think you would know if you ran over a piece of wood with or without nails.
Those spiral nails are most commonly used on pallets.
Unless you frequent construction sites, warehouses, etc., or just happen to run over a pile of them.....I would think what you're thinking.
Who did you p.o. ?

+1 I agree or the wood just broke away

I bet he did know it when he ran over it, a few weeks or months ago, but forgot since then.

Unless the three nails were nearly touching one another I'd rule out the automatic nailgun strip theory.Possible I suppose but unlikely.I would think that if one ran over a section of wood with the nails protruding and they became dislodged from the board that the board would have had to make at least one round through the wheel opening in order to be ripped from the nails which IMO would have created some distinct noise.Which brings me back the the tire sniper theory.I'm not aware that such a person would or would not use rusty nails.

It's absolutely possible that I ran over some wood and forgot about it...

Hmm... now that I'm thinking about it ..... I stopped by the tool rental yard a few weekends ago to get an aerator... well, they had moved to a new location so they just had a big old dirt lot back behind the building..... I did take a little ride around the lot probably a little too fast and a little recklessly.....

Maybe I just learned a lesson.. :)

Thanks, detectives. Part of my faith in mankind has been restored. :)

If someone had set the nails up to puncture your tire, wouldn't they put each nail under a different tire, so you would end up with 3 flats and be stranded?

Or do you carry 3 spare tires?

having spent 40 years in the contracting business, and having every type of fastener, in a tire. it sounds to me that some one had torn a pallet apart, the wood in them is cheap. i would say you ran over the broken end of a pallet board, and weight of the vehicle, split the board, just leaving the nails.

That ^^^^ seems the most likely scenario. I've seen it myself before.

Yah, the story about the rental yard pretty much clinches it for me. My nemesis is drywall screws. They seem to be everywhere, and they seem to find their way into the tires on my SUV with alarming frequency.

Like everyone else, I drop drywall screws, then go on with the work after picking another one out of my pocket or whatever. I should bend over and pick up the dropped one, but I never seem to. Then...when the job's finished, I've forgotten about the one I dropped.

I figure everyone does the same thing, since I've picked them up with my expensive tires all over the place. Feh!

The running over a piece of wood theory seems to be the more plausable answer, about a year ago i encountered a similar senario except it was two nails.
....On the other hand, you should know that Spinner has absolutely no control of those little greenies.:D
