I am looking for a outboard for my 13ft inflatable. I have come across a 67-68 johnson 20 hp 2-stroke. It is in "perfect" running condition. Compression is 135 and 138, spark is good. I am new to boating and don't know anything about motors. what would be a fair price for this motor, can I get parts for it if something happens, how many more season could I get out of it? Your help is desperately needed and greatly apprectiated. Please help:confused:

Well,

Your in the right place. I am new aswell to the evinrude/Johnson motors but I can wrench a bit. From what ive been told and not just by a few but tons of people that Evinrude/Johnson motors are very good motors if you take care of them. I am going to say yes you can plenty of parts from dealers along with this website. Not sure about a price but I imagine if it runs great u will get plenty of years out of it if you do the proper maintence.

if you get it be sure to change the impeller and replace the oil in the lower unit.

A good running '60s Johnson with compression like that should last you for many seasons with proper care. I actually prefer the older motors without all the computer modules and electric shift mechanisms - they are of fairly simple design and are easy to maintain. Parts are readily available. For a good one, I wouldn't mind paying $150-$350. A lot cheaper than the new ones!

I sell those for around $400 up here. When I can get them. I get a lot more 18's than 20's though. They're great engines and all the soft parts are easily available... and that's great compression... Post the model # so that we can determine the exact year.

I searched that model number using the link on the forum and this what I found.

1967 FD-FDL-21
1968 FD-FDL-22

So I am guessing yours is a 68

Re: Need help 67-68 johnson outboard

I am hearing that the motor was built to use leaded gas and that unleaded gas and the ethonol in the gas will cause major damage fairly quickly. Is that true and is that a major concern? Also I have heard that major parts such as lower unit and power heads are not easy to find. If that's true do I need to worry about anything happening to them?

Lead was put into gas to lubricate the exhaust valves on a 4 stroke engine. Yours is neither 4 stroke nor does it have exhaust valves. The ethanol can damage the soft goods, seals hoses etc, but those are replaceable. Parts are readily available. Rick
