2300 2bbl holley on a 302 merc. My boat will not start unless the secondary throttle plate is wide open, but then the rpms are so high it back fires. What could be the problem? Why won't it start unless it is WOT?

I also need to tell everyone that has been helping me on other threads thank you. People drive by while I'm working on it and all they do is make snide remarks like"haven't you fixed that thing yet" not one of them has offered to help me." I come to this forum and I am bombarded by suggestions and helpful information. You people are the best.

My first thought would be that you have the timing 180? out, or the plug wires are all mixed up.
Find #1 TDC on the COMPRESSION stroke, and see where your rotor is pointing. Then make sure that plug wire goes to #1 cylinder.
What firing order are you using, and how are you numbering the cylinders. Had several people try to make a Ford run on a Chevy firing order.

On my distributor the condenser wire and the ground wire that is leading to the - side of the ignition coil are connected to the same point. Is this right? and if not, where do I put the grounding wire? There is no primary terminal so there is no primary wire.

Well look at that, they did put the plugs in the wrong order. I shall correct them by using 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 firing order instead of the cluster fk they used. That's the last time I ever pay someone to work on my boat again.

Amazing. As screwed up as the place I work at is, we at least test run the engines to see if they will actually run after we fix them.

Seriously I don't blame the owner of the shop he was a really nice guy and new what he was doing...but his helper was a retard. He burnt a hole in my tarp and then didn't tell the owner he did it. When I noticed the burn mark and showed the owner he said well that's another reason I fired him two days ago. The owner paid for the tarp. As far as testing the engine before we left there was only a few days until we transfered so I never got around to it.

This why I have NEVER paid anyone to work on ANY of my cars/boats /what have u, (that and the no $$$$ thing I live with).

Sure the shop owner is a much better Mech then me (most of the time) but what are the chances he's gonna work on my rig.

I get the shop man., some tools, go-jo, beer what else do ya need.
Sure I make mistakes but, I know about-em. There not covered up by some dumb*** trying to out quickly.

Sorry for the Rant
