Re: Need help...I hit a huge rock...

That's the propellor hub. It's not really a user replaceable thing. You can have a new one installed at a propellor shop, or you can buy a new prop. These are pretty common props, and any outboard junkyard will have several of them around. New, they're a little pricey.

I bought three or four of them at one time on eBay, though. The most I paid was $15, and all of them were fine. I was fiddling with prop pitch. I sold all but one, which I kept as a spare.

New props are available right here on iboats.

We'll have to wait on the leak until you've looked at it again and sniffed the leaking stuff. Tell us what the bolts look like and where they are in relation to other parts of the lower unit. Then we'll be able to identify what's up.

Here's an example of a prop that should be just right for your 30hp Javelin on eBay. Check the shaft diameter. I believe it's 3/4". If so, this is what you're hunting for, I think. There are several. Since yours is a 30 hp, the 12 pitch should be just right. I had a 1958 35hp, and it used a 10 x13 prop to perfection on a boat of about the same weight as yours., so the 1" pitch drop should do the job. You can find these props in everything from 10" pitch to 14" pitch. Some are 10" dia. Some are 10 3/8".

Actually, you won't see anything when you look at it, but, if the drive pin isn't broken, it's guaranteed that the hub twisted. It's supposed to do that, to protect the lower unit on your engine.

As for the oil, the fuelly, oily, sooty mix that comes from the exhaust housing smells like gasoline. The stuff in the lower unit has a different, strong smell. If you can describe in detail where the oil is on the outboard, at its highest point, then sniff it, we should be able to tell.

The fact that you were able to turn the engine manually with the prop indicates that you have not broken your prop shaft or drive shaft. It sounds to me like the prop hub did its job. The bump could easily have jarred loose some of the crud that always collects in the exhaust cavity in the leg, causing the oozing, but we don't know that, yet.

You need a spare prop, anyhow. You should always have one, just for such situations. That way, you can just pop it on and go on with your day if something like this happens again.

No need to smell it. If you just changed the gear oil, then you know what color it should be, because it takes many, many hours of use to wear it out. Once the gear oil is black (worn out), it has the distinctive smell of something burned.

you're awesome!!! There is no way to test this before putting on another prop? and once i get one and put it on how can i tell it is working?? put in a can of water and rev it ..if it spins like it should i guess that was it???

It's probably exhaust goo and a spun prop. A spun prop will still grip at low speed, thus why you can turn the engine over with it but slips at higher speed/torque.

The lower end looks ok. Where the black marks are is well above where the lower unit fluid is. That looks like it is just sludge for the 2 cycle oil. Was there a shear pin the hole in the shaft? If so was it in one piece?

:DYou just can't see the rubber hub in that prop. It's there, and it has slipped. A good prop will fix your problem. The oil? Don't worry about it. There's no lower unit oil up there. What you're seeing is sludge from the exhaust housing.

Put a good prop on there and go fishing. Just stay off the rocks.

yeah it was in one piece.... and thanks!

edit: it went through the shaft but barely stuck out and not big enough to go in the groves of the prop...looks like it was shaved down...

Re: Need help...I hit a huge rock...

I think that you are missing a thrust washer between the nose (propeller nut) and the propeller. The propeller should not move about on the shaft or it will cause premature failure of the drive pin.

I don't have the parts diagram for your drive but someone may help you with that.

yeah there is like a half inch gap between the prop and the nut on the end with the cotter pin...
