hi there guys, i just got my longblock from rapido,

this i s my concern, the flywheel does not have the triangle shape coupler, it has the round shape one. the studs that bolt the coupler to the flywheel has three space washer each, i install only two space washer on each on the install, will that be much of a problem???

the washers sits between the coupler and flywheel.

thanks

Re: need help mercruiser coupler, dons

oh boy i have to make it more clear, the flywheel is from the old engine, at the tip of the coupler i notice the outdrive shaft has been eating at the edge not the coupler spline, so my gess is that, the extra washer was pushing the coupler back toward the shaft too much that why i only install two and not the three. ypur thought guys.

Re: need help mercruiser coupler, dons

thats what i was thinking bondo any way took of one from each studs, maybe thats why at the outer lip of the coupler the drive shaft was eating away at it because it was pushing back out too far, could that be the reason why the previous enging bearing got hit?? the history of this boat was that the owner install a reman took it out for a few spins and it start knocking.

your thoughts

thanks

I've read this a number of times, and if you have 2 of anything under a reound coupler, the coupler is NOT going to be square with the flywheel.
There shouldn't be any kind of spacers washers or anthing between the coupler and the flywheel.
The coupler has to sit flush against the flywheel. It shouldl never be able to be aligned with only 2 spacers, it would have to be crooked.

Re: need help mercruiser coupler, dons

wow thanks dons i hate my writing and i hate the way i explain things,

after reading my post i see where i am misleading you guys here.

this is what i meant, the flywheel has six studs the coupler has six holes for the studs, on each studs there was three washers between the flywheel and the coupler.

mark this is what was on the broken engine, now it is on the new rapido long block with only two washers install on each studs

so it is six studs not three studs thanks

what ya think don

Nothing goes between the coupler and the flywheel.
I am beginning to think you might just have the wrong studs and locknuts, and just to get the nuts on, you have to space the coupler out away from the flywheel.
Just get the proper studs and locknuts from a Mercruiser dealer for the year your original engine was. Or let me know what it was and I will find the right part numbers for you.

Things aren't adding up, what year is your boat? You said the engine was replaced by the previous owner, you may just have the wrong type coupler for that engine.
IF you have the small diameter coupler that mounts onto the studs on the crankshaft, that is a coupler for 12 3/4" flywheel from 86 and earlier. The engine you now have should have a 14" flywheel, in that case you need a different type coupler. The one with the 3 tabs that bolts to the flywheel. closer to the outside.

If you have a coupler like this, you have the wrong one for that year.

You need one like this.

don you are good the coupler at the top is the one i have on right now,

so what i realy nee is the # 14 triangle shape?? yes i gess lol

don when i perchase the new coupler will it come with hardware to install it on the flywheel, i mean some for of treaded washers because the flywheel has no treads to bolt the coupler on.

also should i change this fly wheel also??

thanks again keep up the good work, you see in my hart i know something was wrong, thats why i did not install the engine antil i was sure. again thanks.

But Don,

he says he is using the flywheel from the old engine, so surely that means he has installed a 12.5" flywheel? I don't know if his starter motor will engage the flywheel, but it sounds like he has the correct coupler for his flywheel, but he probably has the wrong flywheel for his new engine..

Re: need help mercruiser coupler, dons

i am using the same starter from the old engine on the new engine, the starter is the stagard bolt patern before i took the engine apart i did start the engine a few times and it start and throttle fine , the engine was only knocking.

so where we at now do i have the correct fly wheel??

this fly wheel i think has three cutout where the bolt would fit the new coupler don mention, don do you have a pic of the correct flywheel?? also what number manual i need to get for this engine??

Ayuh,.......

If you're using the Staggered Bolt pattern Starter,...... You've got a 14" Flywheel.......
'Cause the 12" Flywheel uses the Straight Across bolt pattern........

It sounds like you have the Right Flywheel with the Wrong Coupler......
