I am having some serious control box issues.

Here's whats going on. When I re-assembled the control box, I lined the TDC with the top of the box . Put everything together, and checked for idle / neutral with the shift handle up.

It was in forward. So I moved the shift handle around, so neutral/idle is on top.

Then forward engages around where full throttle should be, full throttle is around and on the bottom (i.e. full down of the handle almost). And there is no reverse. Well, there is - but by the time the shifter gets into reverse - too late. Engine is already opened up and it only grinds.

The throttle cable is adjusted correctly .. Is this my shifter cable, or ???? adjustment??

Is there any "easy" way to adjust this thing? It's a major PITA to pull the connectors out of the motor.

BTW: 67 Merc 650 (65 hp) outboard with an old Merc Control box.

Is that a typical two cable system? If so, have you verified that the first cable to move when the controls are pushed forward is attahced to the shift linkage on the motor?

It should shift before increasing rpm. Sounds like you are describing the opposite scenario.

There are a few people here that have re-assembled Merc control units recently. If you open it up, it would probably help to take a picture or two of how you have things positioned. From what I have read, Mercury throws in a teaspoon of magic in there to make them work properly. They can easily get complicated.

That is exactly what I was missing. I re-adjusted the throttle cable with the helpful kid (son's friend). When I was adjusting the cable with the son, it was like pulling teeth, with the constant sighs and "I want to go in now"'s.

Kinda like having a wif... err .. nevermind..
