I have a 92' bayliner 24'52 classic, w/mercruiser 5.0 lx alpha gen II. I noticed that water was entering the hull thru the steering arm only when i rev the engine. Boat is in the marina (salt water), i also looked at the outdrive and the mercruiser sticker on the transom plate above the water line has a hole and show a little corrosion. the guy that bottom cleans it said that the outdrive looks to be o.k no corrosion. I have no idea whats under the sticker, if anybody has a alpha outdrive dissasembled picture or drawing, to see what i need to replace or fix. by the way the steering arm has corrosion on it. anyhelp would be appreciated.
thanks
Alex

In the Adult Only Section of this forum you can download the correct manual. Here is the link http://www-alt.mercurymarine.com/mnetdata/SERVICE/CRUISER/Servmanl/14/14cover.pdf

Start at page 4B-8, for an exploded view of the gimbal housing. Item 4 is the seal for the upper pin, which is in the area you described. On page 4B-12 is the gimbal ring, which shows the upper pin, item 14, which connects to the steering lever.

It may be your seal, item 4 on page 4B-8. But you mention a corroded hole in the upper part of the gimbal housing. You should post a picture so others can see what you're talking about.

Ayuh,...

Sounds like it's Rotted Thru,...

There shouldn't be Any Holes there...
