Re: Need help with 20HP Chrysler outboard

impeller looks good ..nobbly bits on end of vanes not worn .Clarly it has set..I leave mine out over the winter. Provided its still supple should be fine ..make sure you fit a tell tail as its the only long term way to know your pump is good ..Would like to see a photo of the pump housing as all the ones I have are corroded to bugggery.

Have sent you the link to the electronic igniton /magneto contact replacement circuitry. Will be posting about this on here soon once I have a few hours on it

Fucawi
What is a tell tale and where do i fit one ??

Re: Need help with 20HP Chrysler outboard

well in the polite world its called a tell tail in US its called a pisser.....In the top of your block you will have a hex /square plug probably at top of that tube that runs past the plugs ...take plug out .Its a standard air line thread 1/4 something .....pipe to a 3 mm hole/nozzle that squirts where you can see it ..usually starboard side angled out from the lower power head casing....if its pissing you are good to go ... I am sure you know ( but the french dont ) you sit on the starboard side and control the OB with your left hand ..!!!
Silly frog picture below ..see they even put the seat on the port side ...

sorry Fucawi,
No hexnut or square plug anywhere to be found on the engine, so in order for the OB to take a **** i have to take other actions.

Re: Need help with 20HP Chrysler outboard

Its not on this site they get upset with me for being straight talking. You have to be very correct when talking with americans so much religion and political correctness to obey .
I have been thrown off Saving old Seagulls twice for making sensible advanced suggestions and they get very upset on LRO.com when you tell them they are talking technical rubbish.
Boat design, net is for real professionals 38000 members and the moderator almost never comes in . The best sites are like this one ..a mix of people who dont know and a number of people who do know and are willing to share . and no Cliques ( like canal boat forum )
Have sent you technical on electronics which I will post here when I have the photos done.

Re: Need help with 20HP Chrysler outboard

Have not been able to get a good view of the plug side of your cylinder head to research the pisser ....so here attached photos of my pisser .....
Outlet is a bolt with 3 mm hole and threads turned off the last 1 cm of the bolt ..suppose you could file it off ...will change for stainless 316 A4 ...post photo of your head please ....heads and pissers what a wacky subject

Re: Need help with 20HP Chrysler outboard

well like you I dont see anywhere to easily put a pisser other than tapping the cylinder head. So I think get it running ..keep an eye on the water out the upper leg outlet and think about the pisser later particularly if you at any time take the head off ..does not make the tapping any easier but you feel more confident when you drill the hole !! You could tap the head and fit a pressure gauge for the water pressure but if you are running it with a tiller its knowing where to mount all this stuff ...I have an overheat switch design to post shortly which will fit these 20 25 30 hp engines even though they have no makers location for the switch,. Great job so far.

Re: Need help with 20HP Chrysler outboard

I'm working on a 1975 20hp and I think the water is not pumping. Should water be coming out of this hole at the back of the leg? IMAG0965.JPG I have taken the impeller apart and it looks the same as my 45hp which pumps water fine. I'm sorry if this seems like a simpleton question, but I have only just started working on both outboards. At the moment smoke comes out of the rectangular hole like a second exhaust and I cannot see anywhere where water is pumping out. Like the other gentleman there is no evidence of a waterline in the powerhead.

Re: Need help with 20HP Chrysler outboard

Could these two holes below the water intake have any relation to the water pumping path? IMAG0966.JPG I can't tell because they are under the muffs or in the tub, but water does run out of them when I lift out of the tub. Possibly just filling up in the tub.

Re: Need help with 20HP Chrysler outboard

I took the lower unit off and stuck a hose up the tube to check for any blockages through the head and it came through fine. I then put a drill on the drive shaft to see if the impeller would pump as is. Nothing came up. I took the water pump apart and it all looked ok like last time. Put it back together and tried the drill again. Nothing. Then while running the drill I poured some water down the tube to try to prime the pump. It came straight back up then started pumping furiously. I took the lower unit out of the tub, dropped it in again and it started pumping straight away. Put it back on the powerhead and it is now pumping fine. Don't know why it wouldn't pump before but it is now fixed. Any ideas why it wouldn't prime itself?

Re: Need help with 20HP Chrysler outboard

Not sure if anyone is up to speed with this.

Bought some new ignition coils on Ebay, they came in today and i have replaced the old ones with the new ones, breaker points and capacitors are not coming back in, i am going electronic with that.
Here are some pictures to look at, the old coils are the black ones.

Re: Need help with 20HP Chrysler outboard

put the lot together again and still no spark, this thing is driving me effin crazy
In the pictures above you see the new coils,1 brown wire is going to ground together with one of the wires from the coil and 1 blue wire is going to be connected to the other wire of the coil.
so 4 wires coming out underneath the flywheel 2 HT lead wire going to a brandnew sparkplug and plug-cap and two 2-wire leads going to the electronic capasitor/point replacement.
Cant effin beleive i dont have a spark.

Re: Need help with 20HP Chrysler outboard

Fucawi youre an A+++++++ guy, this man has helped me above and beyond
Yes folks the engine is running, finally.
Fucawi send his electronic conversions to eliminate breaker points and capacitors, still no spark after some tinckering and email help from Fucawi i finally got a spark and this morning the engine fired up for the first time in a long long time.
Long story short:
Bought an Chrysler model 205HB 20 HP 2 cylinder 2-stroke outboard engine for abt 100 dollars. Engine was standing aside for a long long time and the pistons where seized into the cylinders. After a lot of oil and penetrating oils the pistons where moving freely, but no spark at the plugs, turned out one of the ignition coils was broken and thus the engine would not start. Talked about the engine here on I Boats.com and Fucawi was the first to reply and helped me out in turning the breaker-points and capacitors into an electronic conversion.
I have made them myself and got no spark,Fucawi send me two units by mail to my home to try out and stood by me every step of the way in getting the engine to run.
Props to Fucawi in my book its a GREAT guy and i cant thank him enough.
