my fluid keeps getting very foamy with one raise and lower of unit. what i dont understand is that if sits for about an hour, after trim tops out the pump motor seems to bog down, after working up and down a few times it works fine. when the motor strains i can her what sounds like a vacume leak from somewhere but i cant identify. i have used every method i can think of to find what i assume is some kind of a leak. i am no novice at hydaulics and have been through the tilt cylinder and valve body twice with no change in service, and still get this hissing sound and frothy fluid. i have used tilt fluid, atf and non detergent 20w oil. the unit does not creep down like you might suspect. i started this repair job to repair a substantual leak at the top of the tilt cylinder when the unit was working fine. when i resealed the tilt cylinder the shaft was slightly pitted so i worked it with 600 grit and tilt fluid and does not leak. it is obvious i have done something wrong, i just cant figure out what, any takers?

Did you take the vanes out of the pump and reinstall them backwards?

How many times have you cycled it since you re-assembled? Might just be trapped air. Manual calls for non-detergent 30 weight. Bleed procedure: Tilt up, remove fill plug, top off fluid, cycle 3 to five times(with plug out) until you stop getting air, top off when tilted up, replace plug. Seloc Force outboard manual, '84- '93.Good Luck.

i dont have enough fingers and toes to count how many times i have cycled. one other thing, when the motor is tilted all the way up and start to let it down the trim cylinder goes in as well so that when the motor reaches the trim cylinder it is almost all the way in.

Have you tried the bleed procedure? Also if you let the rump run after the rams are fully retracted, the oil will foam and you need to bleed again.

Are you leaving the fill screw off or loose when you cycle it?? Try that and see if it helps.

Re: need help with 89 force 85hp tilt & trim

i have tried to cycle with plug off, with the help of an extra set of hands have filled the reservoir while tilting up and notice about two thirds the way up foamy fluid comes out of what appears tp be a small rectangular relief vent in the pump body above and to the left of the filter screen. any ideas?...........anyone?

still trying. this is a somewhat of a new unit and i dont understand what is going on. i can make it work about half way up then the motor bogs down, if i relieve pressure at the line the motor picks back up.

Do you have the pump with the 4 steel lines from pump to cylinders, with 2 snap-rings holding the pilot check valves in?

no, this is not the prestolite unit, it is my understanding that this unit is the newer unit sold as a replacement. four hex bolts on motor.

it has a cylindrical pump motor (not cone shaped) with four hex screws holding it to the valve assembly/metering base that is bolted to a manifold that attaches to the tilt brackett. manual release on starboard side and fill hole on the stern end, fill with motor raised. possibly from a 75hp

I think I found a break down of the pump. When you say foamy fluid comes out of relief vent, are you sure the valve body is not leaking? You also say trouble started when you rebuildt cylinder, I would recheck my work. You also say trim cylinder goes in first, from what I read indicates a crossed line. Does the tilt cylinder have a return line at top of cylinder with a band around the cylinder holding a brass fitting for the return line connection?

Yes I am sure the valve body is not leaking. I have replace the tilt cyl with a known good one. I was able to get a line diagram from my local dealer and have check fluid passage. Yes tilt cyl has band and brass fitting. When I get both cyl’s all the way down and begin to lift, the motor boggs about 1/4 the way up.if i crack a line during the time it boggs the motor winds out and amp load drops. If I work it up and down 5 or 6 times it begins to work close to how it should. Let sit for an hour and it has trouble again.

Backing up a bit; are you still getting air in the fluid(foaming)? And what fluid do you have in it now.

still getting frothy fluid, power steering fluid, works better than 20 wt, 30wt or atf.
