Re: need help with 9.5

Can you use auto grade 80/90 instead of marine? I bought the marine but I could get the auto for free from work. just wondering?

I went one further for a spark checker, I took an aluminum bar, about 5" long, tapped in two rows of 4 plug holes, and attached a stud to one end for a cable with a large aligator clip on it. That way I can screw in all of the plugs at once, hooked to the ignition wires. I also use it when I check compression to prevent any electrical damage.

Re: need help with 9.5

I just bought 4 outboards for a sweet price and hope to make a couple good ones from them. 2 are evinrude sportwins 9.5 hp, 1965 and 1967. the other 2 are johnsons, one is a 1971 and the other has the serial plate missing. any help identifying the last one would be great. is there a name for the johnsons? the model number from the one is 9r71r.

first i will check for compression and spark but i still need a gas tank for them. anybody got a spare they want to get rid of?

where could I get a parts list or engine breakdown?

I have a lot of experience with cars but not with small engines, anything important I should know?
The 9r71r is a Johnson Seahorse long shaft.

I have the short shaft version of that motor and have restored it
Here it is:http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=295167
I have the OMC manual for it
Let me know if you need any info

Cheers

Would you mind posting a picture of that, Id like to try to make one. Thanks

Re: need help with 9.5

Specific to the 9.5 with no spark is the problem with the kill switch wiring; Try disconnecting the leads for the kill switch and see if you have fire.

Re: need help with 9.5

thats what I was wondering, 1 qt will probably fill most of em anyhow. my next question is why am I getting no spark? I disconnected the kill button and checked the ohms through it, checked ok and still no spark with it disconnected. I am using that tool and nothing. I even turned all the lights off to see if there was anything.

Sounds like it's time to pull the flywheel and have a look at things under it. Could be some surprises waiting for you there. I opened one up once and there was no coil in place. The guy told me it ran the last time he had it our. Ya right. Rick.

is there any way to check the condenser? and coils? should I be replacing these anyhow for reliability reasons?

Re: need help with 9.5

You have a bit of a unique situation there. Given that you have four motors using the same parts you could buy all new electrics ( coils, condensers, points) and move them from motor to motor during your trouble shooting phase. Takes more time but less money. I have no doubt you will require at least one set of electrics by the time your done. Most coils from the 9.5's will be very cracked and you will be able to tell if replacement is required just by the appearance of them. Cracked ones will often work still but should be replaced. Rick.

who is Mr FR and how do I get a hold of him? I cleaned and adjusted my points, they were about .010, never did get the flywheel back on and pull though. will do that tonight. I might as well buy the parts, even if I don't need them, it would be good to have em for a spare set. can you remove that whole housing that holds the coil, condenser, etc. it would be great to find out how. I am winning a book right now on Ebay.

Re: need help with 9.5

I gapped the points ( they were at about .010), cleaned them with brake-clean and a q-tip, checked continuity through the coil and condenser(passed), then rechecked for spark. It worked! then primed the cylinders with a little premix and it fired. hooked fuel up to the motor from the tank and it wont run on its own. no big surprise, but I'm almost there.
I think I will look into a carb kit, it couldn't hurt. If thats all I have to do to get one running, that would be great. I hope everything in the lower is ok. drained it and there was a very small amount of water that came out before any lube but it was not milky. just clear water then decent gear oil. should I take the lower apart? or just run it and hope for the best?

Re: need help with 9.5

Hope for the best but change the nylon washers on the vent and drain plugs. Often times they leak a little and should be replaced each time you drain the leg oil. Sounds like your well on your way. There will be no stopping you once you get that manual. Rick.

there wasn't any washers there, thats probably why there was water. I will be sure to get some.
