Re: Need Help With Force Motor

Great, my vaca is in four weeks, I hope to have it on the water by then. The powerhead should be arriving next week and I will install. I will give the WD40 a shot on the key.

If the flywheel key gets to buggered up, you can go to your local ACE Hardware. They have replacements. Generally I have found that ACE has a much better selection for these types of things ( stainless steel bolts, brass fittings, etc) than Lowes or Home Depot.

Re: Need Help With Force Motor

A marine shop contacted me after I emaild them about a cylinder head, they wanted 150 plus 60 shipping for the head, but they indicated to me its "ready to be bored", in other words more money once I get it here. I brought up the idea of the powerhead and they replied they would look around for one. A couple days later they emailed me and it was a done deal.

I have been soaking the key for a couple of days in some oil thats for my framing nail gun, I dont have any wd on hand. I will try it tonight after work.

Fed Ex dropped off the powerhead today. Looks like it?s in great shape, I will be installing this weekend.

Any idea what the torque settings are for flywheel and the bolts that go through the motor leg?

Also I just have an old needle torque wrench, will this work. I don?t really want to drop 50 bucks on a clicker torque wrench.

Needle type torque wrench will work. 90 ft.-lbs on the flywheel nut. I put a dab of grease on the cone shaped part of the crankshaft where the flywheel sits, and red loctite on the threads of the flywheel nut.

Getting the flywheel back on can be tricky. Use some grease to hold the key in place. It will want to move out of place as soon as you place the flywheel on. Usually takes repeated tries before you get it. You have to position yourself directly above the power head and look straight down at the key and the slot in the flywheel as you slowly lower it down to make sure everything is lined up.

If you're referring to the nuts that hold the power head to the motor leg, that would be 22.5 ft.-lbs. I don't think those are really that critical. As long as you're within 5 lbs or so, you should be OK.

Yeah it took me like 15 tries to get my flywheel back on! I had to have my neighbor hold a spotlight above me so I peer out of one eye and try to line it up where it wouldn't knock the key out when the magnets grabbed it! Its tricky!!

Yeah LOL! I'd wait until it's on before pounding a few brews down.

Just a reminder to put some silicone RTV sealant on the surfaces of the power head that come into contact with the lower leg. This will prevent any water or exhaust fumes from leaking into the exhaust cowling area. This factory applied sealant is why it is sometimes difficult to separate the power head from the lower leg.

Will do, one other delima. On the stator there is a notch, does this go to the spark plug side or the carburator side wht I put the stator back on?

On my engine (120hp '91) the two wire looms (stator/trigger) exit in the 5 o'clock approximate position when looking down on top of the motor with the spark plugs point at your guts. I thought there was only one possible option with this anyway? I forget now.

The looms come down the side the switch box and coils are on.

I found it:

I think we have different stators, this doesn't look like mine. I have some green wires that are by themselves and then a yellow and white that are together. I will try to post a pic tomorrow because both my brother in laws just arrived so it looks like its time to crack some suds. No sense in posting pics of three pasted men trying to figure out how to put a motor back together:p

The wires don't seem to reach in this position. Any other thoughts? They reach with the notch pointed at the exhaust cover??? When pointed at plugs all but one wire reaches.

I guess the old memory isn't as sharp as it once was....anyways, it doesn't really matter which position it is mounted. Mount it so that the wires reach the terminal block. Make sure you can run the wires in a way to minimize the chance of rubbing against the flywheel.

Thanks pnwboat,

I think the main problem is that I always open a beer before I open the tool box. A hobby without beer just isnt the same.:D

That might explain why some things don't go back together as easy as when they came apart...A few cold ones will scramble a memory!!

On the stator issue, I had the Merc Red Stator and it had arrows showing which way it was supposed to be installed. Not sure if the position actually matters or not but I would think so if they were giving different positions for different motors.

Re: Need Help With Force Motor

I think I got it. My concern is that the Key is down in there about a 1/8 to a quarter of an inch. Is it supposed to come flush with the top of the flywheel? I got 90 lbs on it then I backed off the nut to check it out. The flywheel is about a 32nd higher than the top of the shaft neck.

Does this sound correct. I can see the top of the key, I just dont know if the wheel is set all the way down.
