I just bought this 1995 mariner 2 stroke 4 hp motor[ serial #D976775] and I've been having starting issues with it. I thought the fuel was leaking out from the tank hose connection but, now I see a puddle under the carb. I can start it with the fuel shut off but, shortly after I switch it back on the carb floods and fuel spills out of a hole next to the mixing chamber opening in the carb. If I pull on the cord again more fuel spills out. What is causing this and how do I fix it. Also how do I adjust the idle mixture screw? it has a spring under it , do I turn it in until lightly seated and back it it out 1-1/2 turns? Thanks in advance, anxious to go fishing.

Your float is sticking. You need to pull and overhaul the carb.

Thanks,
What should I ask for at the parts store?

Depends.... you may have a float that is sinking, therefore you need a float. You may have a bad needle and seat and maybe the float is good?? You probably won't know till you get it torn down. Probably carb kits while they're out, kits are cheap.

How do I tell if the float is defective? I can't see any signs of wear on the jets, although it looks like the guy I bought it from did a hasty cleaning job on it and there is brown gunk in all the corners of the bowl.

Put it back together and it starts fine, runs for a bit then dies, then it won't start again without the choke on first. It's not leaking fuel out the carb anymore but, I'm not sure if the float is set right or if it's defective?

Motor only starts with choke on but, will not run at idle speed, have to give it some gas or it dies. Does this sound like a partly clogged jet? Still not sure if I should just replace the float anyway? I'm aferry ride from a parts store and am trying to get it all in one trip. Thanks for any advice.

The float should float. Make sure it's not getting filled with gas. If you have brown gunk in the corner of the bowls, you should assume there might be brown gunk elsewhere. Clean the carb. Since you have it apart you might as well replace gaskets, needle, etc. If the float seems intact re-use it.

Thanks, cleaned out with carb cleaner and compressed air. The float seems in good shape, plastic is hard and shiny. I'll pick up the gasket kit and needles I guess and post back my results.
