Re: Don't know where to start

Re: Don't know where to start

You need to take someone with you then next time to launch. That person can drive while you can futz with the motor. You can then try to manually throttle up the motor while underway by pushing on the throttle arm and watching what's going on on the motor.

If the cold start advance lever will throttle you up while your in gear and moving on the water, then maybe your main throttle cable is stretched and/or out of adjustment....or possibly bound up. If you can throttle up pretty well at idle(and in neutral), but you bog down under load then you may have a fuel delivery and/or timing advancement issue.

Are all fuel lines(from tank to carb) new or fairly new? Have you checked every inch of fuel line for kinks(especially on the motor itself) or fuel restriction of any kind?

Unless you are absolutely sure that your carbs are squeaky clean....pull them again and make sure EVERY orifice is clean.

Re: Don't know where to start

The start advance has to be off before using the throttle. Othe than using the start advance I can not throttle up without putting in gear. It doesn't so much feel as if it's bogging down as its just not reving to full throttle. I'm not sure if I messed something up doing the link and sync or if it's some other problem. I have not taken the carbs off. I'm kind of intimidated by that. I have never worked on a carb on anything. I'll have to look thru the manual and see if I think I can do it.

Re: Don't know where to start

I was intimidated also when I took off a carb for the first time. They are surprisingly simple. The key is to work on a clean surface and disassemble slowly and don't try to force anything. There's really nothing to it. Your going to have to clean them eventually, so no better time than now.

Your manual has an exploded view of the carbs(so do most boat sites), so if you forget where something goes...just refer to the diagram.

Remember, you want to troubleshoot in steps. Once you confirm that your carb is clean and the rest of the fuel delivery system(fuel lines, fuel pump, etc) is good THEN proceed to the next thing (spark, timing or whatever).

Re: Don't know where to start

Yeah I'm pretty sure that needs to be my next step. I've been hoping I could just make some adjustments and not have to dig into the carbs. Given the condition the rest of the boat was in when I picked it up I'm sure they haven't been cleaned as long as the p/o had it. 3 years I think. Im just going to have to suck it up and do it. Do you think if I'm pulling them apart I should just go a head and get a rebuild kit verses just cleaning so I know everything is good or should I go one step at a time?

Re: Don't know where to start

I'm a fan of just pulling them apart and inspecting them before I go ordering new parts. You may find that you don't need a kit...or you may find out that you need a part that isn't included in the std "kit". Saves you from ordering twice...and paying shipping twice.

Just dig in and get those carbs off. ;)

Take pics of anything that you think you may have problems remembering how to put back together.

Re: Don't know where to start

I suppose that's a good point. Once I take it apart how do I know if parts need to be replaced? I I have to take measurements or will I see obvious wear or other such problems?

Re: Don't know where to start

You may/may not need a new base gasket and/or the gasket between the bowl and main carb body.

Check float needles for wear. They'll probably be black tipped(neoprene). If your floats happen to be cork....replace them(it).

Your service manual will show where the jets etc are. I'm not familiar with your carb, but you may have to grind a thin screwdriver down a bit to fit into the holes to unscrew the jets.

I think #33 is one of your high speed jets.

Re: Don't know where to start

Thanks for that. I think I'm going to try and tear into them next weekend. I've got to get something going on here. Starting to get a bit frustrated. I've put a good amount of money into this boat and I really want to go play.

Re: Don't know where to start

Your very close to having it figured out. I see that the carb kit is only $16 bucks, so even if you do need it, it's not expensive. I'm guessing that a cleaner carb or some adjustment is all that's left to solve this. It's not looking like you need any major parts(fingers crossed)

It's still early season, so you're not going to be missing much.

View all of this, as the price of your outboard education. The more proficient you become with outboards, the less likely that you'll ever need to pay a marine mechanic for repairs or maintenance.

Less than a year ago, I knew NOTHING about outboards. Now, I have a good basic knowledge of them. My next project is learning how to test a motor with a DVA adapter.

It just takes time, some patience, and a lot of reading(and asking questions).

Re: Don't know where to start

Yeah I hope your right. It is a good point about a good way to learn. I'm sure I should be able to do it I usually can get anything mechanical done if I try. I just hear so many horror stories about guys having to tear into their carbs time after time to get them right. Plus there is a lot of small parts so I'm kinda psyching myself out about it. Where did you see that carb kit at? If its that cheap ill probably pick it up worst case scenario I don't use it and have spare parts laying around.

I tell you I am really glad I stumbled into this forum though. I don't think I'd have had the confidence to do any of this stuff without the encouragement and advice of everyone on here.

You and me, both.

I try to "pay my freight" here by attempting to help out where I can, with my still limited experience.

Yeah that's exactly why I try to put my opinion in where I can. I don't know much but every once in a while I come up with a Jim lol.

Re: Don't know where to start

Can anyone tell me if these compressions numbers are good and why the might have varied so much on 2 successive tests moments apart? On the first test I got #1 112 / #2 128 / #3 122 / #4 112 and on the second test I got #1 115 / #2 130 / #3 125 / #4 110. Thanks for any ideas.

Re: Don't know where to start

I would say better to buy a 'fresh' kit with gaskets that handles the fuel of today than an 'original' which a dealer happens to have in stock since the time of OMC! Even if you buy an original BRP packed kit, it is probably sourced from the same manufacturer as several aftermarket kits.

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the omc and the Sierra carb kits? Is one better than the other?
