I have an Orlando Fisherman 16' tri hull. I want to gel coat the complete hull,
all the holes and scrapes have been filled and the surface is smooth. Do I
use a primer? if so what kind? how many coats? do I use a brush or roller?
what kind? do I let the primer dry between coats?
I will need light green gel coat, how many coats? Do I use a brush or
roller? what kind? do I let the gel coat dry between coats?

THANKS TO ALL...................HAS

uh........oh oh........light green eh?

go to your local fiberglass store and get some neutral clear gellcoat.

then some green and white pigment.

do your best to match the color.......its a lost art that i am still looking for....lol

as far as the application.......i suggest to spray......you can brush it on.....but its not the best as the brush lines will be very deep.

just search gellcoat repair.....or chip repair here on the forum .....theres tons of stuff on it.....and you dont have to use primer.

While Im normally a Gel kinda guy..Im going to have to agree with Bond-o on this.

I have read here that Rusto is a good low end paint... but I have never used it therefore I have no other recommendations othere then Do you homework and read how deep the water is before you take a plunge ;) .

Bond-o
What does Roll, 'n tip it with Rustolem Paint mean??

My Dad,my Brother and I bought this boat in 1972, we used it for a part time crabbing
business. When my Dad died in 1991 my brother took the boat, he painted the bottom
and kept it in the water most of the time. I got the boat in April 2009 after it sat on
the trailer over 2 years, at no time was it ever covered, it was a mess. I have a long
list of what I done to the boat, the 50hp Mercury engine,(NO. 3 engine) and trailer.
In OCT, last year, I took everything off and out of the boat and turned it over.
I took off 3 coats of bottom paint, repaired the osmosis damage and the holes and
scrapes. Most of the old gel coat is gone and the hull is nice and smooth. I am trying
to make it as close to new as possible, I take my time and try to do the best I can.

I thank you Bond-o and oops! and yacht dr.

I need all the info. I can get........THANKS TO ALL

Re: Need info..how to gel coat

just to let you know.....i am at the shop right now trying to match a yellow gellcoat... i have tryed 45 different combintions so far....im about to give up and see if the store has any different yellow that does not turn orange!

looks great when the light is directaly on it....but when you move the light around....and view it form a bunch of different angles.....its like that paint that changes color depending on what angle you look at it !.

green would be ok if you could get correct pigments....bur standard pigments are usually to dark to start.....once you hit them with white to lighten them up....they pale on you.

Re: Need info..how to gel coat

If you have your surface prepped and are set on gel. Apply with a 3.5 or bigger gun. I have already tried the 2.5 and it stank. you want 2 to 3 coats at 10 to 15 mils. thick not to exceed 30. To thick and it will crack. Try not to thin out to much it will hurt the life of gel coat. Dura tech is not necessarily the cats tail when thinning gel. Gel will be rough as crud when sprayed. You will have to wet sand and buff. Gel changes color a little when dried so it is a pain to match. I have only sprayed one seat and do not claim to be an expert. Mine was metal flake and clear. So I can not help you on colors. If you find something close to what you want I would just use that as touchups may not be as bad. Someone on here sprayed their boat with yellow with a Wagner power sprayer. I am considering painting my boat due to the advice given to me by the pros here, or at least a solid gel on bottom and then risk the flake on top. Still undecided. I might give gel another go with a 4.5 gun to see what happens. In the long run paint will be far easier than a gel job, but you sound like you are attached to that boat so enter at your own risk. Good luck and post some picks.

Re: Need info..how to gel coat

One more thing if you decide to gel ask these guys they are the ones who do this for a living. They will shoot you straight and not give you a web answer. I didnt like the one they gave me but I sure respect their expertise in the manner. Before you thin gel out with the oddball stuff other sites say will work ask these guys.

Re: Need info..how to gel coat

to get a gun over the standard paint tip means special purchase....i shoot a 3.5 and i had to lay out money for it.

by the way pro....next time you shoot....go for 50 mil thickness....sanding will take a big amount off and you want to be around 35 thou for final thickness....if you shoot at 30 and sand 15 off......you are at 15 and thats too thin
at 15....translucents like red, yellow or some blue will show thru

Re: Need info..how to gel coat

I'm back again with more questions
What Rustoleum Paint do I use?
How many coats should be put on?
Do I need to use a primer? If so what kind?
Do I need a leveling additive?
How long do you think Rustoleum will last on a trailered boat?
I will roll or brush it on because I dont know a thing about spray painting!!
Also how do I put picts on the forum?

THANKS AGAIN TO ALL

Use Rustoleum Professional Paint. Thin it about 10 to 15% with Penetrol.
Use Rustoleum recommended primer. Go to Lowe's and ask they will have all you need.
I would recommend 3 Light coats. That is, roll your paint on in thin coats do NOT try and cover it in ONE coat. Do One coat every 12 hours. DON'T paint below 60 degrees OR over 90 degrees. Stay out of direct sunlight. Allow 7 days before flipping and putting back on trailer. This should last several years with occasional touch ups. Use a 7" FOAM roller. Then TIP it off with a 4" foam brush OR you can Re-Roll it with a ALMOST dry roller. Just wet it with paint then squeeze out all the paint you can and lightly roll over the area you just painted to get the bubble to lay down. This roll and roll method was used by drewpster with GREAT success. Check it out.
