I mix the gas 50 to 1 and it started and ran. the motor is new to me.
How can I tell if the water pump is working? Should I see water squirting out a hole some were?
I pulled the bottom plug on the lower unit and there was no water however the oil was not vary thick and blue/green. It looked like the kind of oil you mix with the gas. What lube should I get for the lower unit? I will change it.

50:1 is correct. Mis the gas with tcw-3 oil. Synthetic is better.

The lower lube oil should be just that. Lower unit oil for outboards. You can get it at most auto stores or walmart. Make sure to change the nylon washers around the 2 screws when you change them also. And fill the oil from the lower screw until it comes out the upper one to stop air bubbles from forming.

There's a hole in the lower leg about half way up the back where water and exhaust should come out together... If there's none then don't run it... Investigate the water pump/impeller/cooling system.

If you are running it and you think it's overheating feel the head between the plugs. You should be able to touch it and not burn your fingers. Or water should not sizzle when splashed on it.
