I need a picture of the firing order on the distributor. I know the order is 1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3, but I need to know where #1 is on the cap.

I left my manual at work:|

Thanks

Impossible to say for sure, it could be anywhere someone put it in the past 25+ years. What you need to do is bring the engine up to #1 TDC on the compression stroke and see where the rotor points. that is where #1 wire will go. And the firing order 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2.
The AQ260 is a Chevy 35o.

The truth of the matter is, you can put the plug wire for number one cylinder anywhere on the cap, just follow the firing order after you select number one, in the correct direction of rotation.

While all the above is true, here is the typical placement of number 1:

mkast, that is not entirely correct.

you can put #1 anywhere you like AS LONG as you pull the distributor and index it to the point of your liking, while on tdc compression #1 cyl.

If you put it any place you like without doing this your timing will be way off. If your lucky it wont fire. If your unlucky it will back fire possibly gestroying your carg or something else.

think ignition with the intake valve open. Or exhaust valve open.

If this is what you meant mkast I apologize, but you werent very clear with your statement.

You dont need a book to find #1. pull the sparkplug and turn the motoer over with a breakerbar or have someone bump the starter with the ign. disabled. do this till #1 cyl. builds pressure then watch the timing mark.

Probably firing order is wrong.

take the valve cover off on the port side. remove the coil wire. turn the engine over untill you see the intake valve for the number one cylinder (one at very front of engine on port side) go down then back up. then, very slowly bump the starter untill the mark on the ballancer comes around to the "O" mark.

that is top dead center for the number one cylinder.

take your distributor cap off. the plug wire the rotor is pointing to is the number one. start there and place all the other plug wires accordingly.

now your firing order is correct. you can replace the valve cover, you wont be needing it any more. turnn the distributor untill the rotor is in dead center of the number one plug wire while at top dead center.

this will be enough to start the motor, but you still need to set the timing with a timing light. to do that, you need to plug up the vacume advance on the distributor, or dissconect the electronic advace for later models, then set it at about 4 to 6 degrees before top dead center. hook up the advance and........

your done.

I need a picture of the firing order on the distributor. I know the order is 1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3, but I need to know where #1 is on the cap.

BTW, im pretty sure the firing order for a small block chevy is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. just off the top of my head from memory, so, better check.

and if it is the port side engine of a twin engine boat....better make sure its not reverse rotation.

1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
This is correct for a standard rotation chevy smallblock.

there is no need to remove the valve cover. just remove the #1sparkplug, dissable the ignition, and stick your thumb over the sparkplug hole. bump the engine over until the cylinder builds pressure then watching the harmonic balancer set it on 0* TDC.

Your timing is very much off.

detirmine where your rotor is pointed while the #1 cyl. is at TDC and go from there.

You don't have to pull the valve cover to find TDC on #1. All you have to do is pull a spark plug out. I usually stick the hose from the compression tester in it and use a remote start button to bump the starter over. When you feel compression building on #1 cylinder, start watching the timing mark. As soon as it lines up with 0, you are at #1 TDC.
Now, look at your rotor, it's pointing to where #1 is for how your distributor was installed by a previous owner or mechanic.
Since you have backfiring, you are either off on where #1 is or you are using the wrong firing order.
Look at my first reply, I gave you the proper firing order for an AQ 260. I know for a fact it's not 1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3,

Re: Need picture of AQ260 firing order....

I had the firing order right, that was a typ-o on my part. I'm going to try the compression tester method....it looks easier.
I'll let you guys know what I find.

Thanks guys8)
