Need Quick Outrdrive Help Please

Hiya folks. My Dad just called me and told me my brother-in-law hit a stump or something in dad's boat and destroyed his lower unit. Skeg is gone, one prop blade is gone, and gimbal ring is broke. Yeah, he must have hit hard. Anyway, Dad's boat has a 3.0L with Alpha 1 Gen 2, not sure what gear ration that is. I have an extra Gen 1 drive with 1.84 ratio sitting in my garage.

1) Will my Gen 1 lower unit and gimbal ring fit his boat?
2) If the Gen 1 lower unit won't fit the Gen 2 upper, would the whole Gen 1 drive fit?
3) If it fits, is the difference in gear ratio a problem?

3. Yes If you go to a lower pitch prop to try and compensate you will loose top speed and you won't get on plane near as fast. For a 3.0, you need to stick with a 1.98 ratio.

A new lower from SEI will run 'bout $700 or so...
The Ring, I'd look for used, or new from Merc..

'course, I'm also thinkin' there's gonna be more broken pieces found durin' the tear down..

Well, shucks, I guess he'll have to empty his wallet. Apparently the skeg sheared right at the base of the gear housing, so welding it is not an option. I'm not too surprised that the Gen 1 won't fit, but I did figure the gimbal ring would. Guess we're screwed all around. I hope it didn't damage the transom too. That's a hard hit. BTW Bond-o, looks like SEI lowers are $845 these days, unless you know a cheaper dealer. Thanks fellas.

Are you guys 100% sure my gen 1 gimbal ring won't fit the gen 2 housing? I can't figure out the difference, but I also am unable to do a side by side comparison.
