Need some help with Starcraft Jupiter fasteners

My Jupiter is creeping along and I have finally got the floor cut out. I plan to try to rivet the 1/2" plywood back to the stringers, but am having a hard time finding pop rivets long enough to go through the floor locally. Has anyone bought longer pop rivets readily available locally? Are rivets really better?

Theoretically rivets will do a better job pulling the deck boards and the stringers/ribs closer together. That being said, I used regular deck screws from Home Depot on both my Jupiter and on my SS and they worked great. If you go the rivet route, see if you have a Grainger or Fastenal locally. Yup, just like ez mentioned, ya gotta go to fastener specific place as you won't find them at the big box store. Picked mine up at a local fastenal place...

What are the advantages of using rivets versus deck screws? I'm about to replace my deck and had assumed I would just use SS deck screws??

The theory would be that a rivet would not work loose over time whereas a screw could potentially.

Reality is that once you use 5200 to seal up the screw hole in the deck and lay down a few coats of epoxy over that, the screw will never move.

So, in short, screw or rivet, either will be totally fine.

ADD: SS screw and alum rib would make for a dissimilar metal issue. Some guys are concerned about such things while others throw caution to the wind and run with it. To each his own

I appreciate all the responses. I think that I will fill in all the little holes in the stringers and just use screws. I plan on just water proofing the wood and just being able to snap a line where the stringers are. I can drill some pilot holes and then just 5200 some screws and zip them in. I don't have a local place to buy epoxy resin, so I plan on using poly with cloth. Does anyone else have another way of treating plywood a "cost-effective" way? I had considered a few coats of oil based Rustoleum since I also have it inside the garage as well. I doubt that it will be durable enough though. I plan on outdoor carpet to finish it. The wife prefers it...

All the Starcrafts I have redone I have sealled all the wood with three coats of polyurethane spar varnish, which works just fine, considering the origional ply was coated with nothing.

1965 Starcraft Jupiter help

As my quest continues to fix up my 1965 Jupiter, I again have more questions. The first is if I can just use regular pop rivots for replacing the rub rail? It seems that it would be much quicker to just drill and remove the rivots here rather than trying to sand around the aluminum rub rail and then taping it off for paint. I attached pics of the rail.

My next question is more up to opinion than anything. The PO must have discovered the self tapping screw and fishing. He cut this hole on top of the deck at the front of the boat for a rod holder. It's about 2" or bigger. There is one on each side next to the driver and front passenger. You can see where the chrome trim for the foot pad is in relation to the hole. I was thinking about making the holes bigger and putting in a flush mount rod holder, but it seems cumbersome. I'm also considering cup holders. Either way will require cutting the holes bigger. Any better ideas? Are these bad ideas?

Lastly, what kind of finish is everyone using? I am using Rustoleum professional enamel. The boat has alot of "character". I just don't want every single dent and ding to stand out. Is a flat finish too dull? I'm planning on white for the color.

I went ahead and drilled out all the rivots holding the rub rail/ storage tray on the inside of the boat. This has made sanding much easier and faster so far. I'm hoping to have the boat prepped for paint in about 2 weeks or so, but I really want to get some ideas for my holes that I have on the deck taken care of first. Also, has anyone had any luck with just spray painting the bottom of their boat? I'm mostly looking for durability instead of what it looks like. I don't have the means right now to get the boat flipped and I don't plan on alot of prep time on something only a few people will ever see. Thanks!

If by spray painted you mean rattle cans then don't! I painted my Jupiter that way and went through so may darn cans of paint that I probably could have had it professionally done! Also the overspray really killed the gloss. It held up fine though.

Not the whole boat, but just the bottom. It will be just easier it seems to just get a few cans and scotch brite the old paint and let it rip. I'm thinking about semi-gloss white for the whole boat since it will hide some of the dents. Any ideas for what to do with the holes???

Didn't take too many cans either. I laid 3 healthy coats and I believe it took 6 cans maybe? Or was it only 3, I can't remember now sorry. Had to have been 6. Either way it wasn't too bad

I do believe EZ used good ol fashioned regular Rusto in the regular sized cans. This is the Pro version with the bigger can and the improved spray tip.

Hmmm... That is looking very viable. Is that finish gloss or semi? I plan on prepping my bare spots with zinc chromate and then Rustoleum Clean Metal primer. I'd like to final sand the primer with 320 and maybe I'll go the spray bomb route. It dries fast and I can touch it up easy.

It's gloss finish. Yah, I was very happy with how it went The thing I think I like best is I can pick it up at any number of lumber yards in the area - easy touch ups

Touch ups are easy with Rattle Can paint, however the rattle can paint does not have a hardener in the paint. If you have a decent sized compressor you can use Rustoleum Pro Oil Based High Gloss paint and add Acrylic Enamel Hardener to it and it is a very durable finish. YOu can buy a HVLP gun at Harbor freight for $20 bucks and a quart of paint will paint the entire hull. Total cost of the paint job should be less than $50 bucks. Check out page #10 of my Flamingo thread for instructions on how to prep and paint the hull.

I'm on the fence about shooting it. I have a quart of Gloss White, the compressor, and a cheapo high pressure gun. I just don't want to flip the boat over since I'm a one man army. The gloss, I'm afraid, is going to show way too many dents and dings. I'm still trying to figure out how to hide some of the holes that the PO cut into this poor boat as well. I will see what it looks like after primer I guess.
