Re: Need To Know How To Handle My Neighbor??

Instead of "just you" talking to the parent of the kid, why don't all of the ticked off neighbors have a talk with daddy!?!?!?! (There's power in numbers).

We had a problem with a kid 20 years ago, with his head banging music from about 8-10:30 EVERY NIGHT !!!

I had a broken leg, and I hobbled over to ask him to turn the sound down. He told me where to go. I told him in the morning that he'd hear more fiddles and steel guitars than he'd ever heard in his life.

I called a buddy of mine, and borrowed a couple of power amps, and hooked them up to my speakers to my PA system, along with the power amps. (I had a dance band at the time).

Well, by the time I got about half way through the first old Gene Autry record, the kid was over to the house asking me to turn it down, so he could sleep until noon !!!!!!!!!

I told him to F*** off !!!!!!!!

That night, he did NOT turn up his stereo any at all.

Lesson learned.

P.S. My mom lived 8 blocks away, and "knew" it had to be me with the loud music !!!!!! :D

I even had phone calls with requests for songs to be played !!!!!! ;)

Re: Need To Know How To Handle My Neighbor??

Sad to hear that even 3 acres isn't enough to be far enough away from annoying people. We have this same situation in my neighborhood. And I live in a development with quarter acre lots. Everyone is fairly respectful except this one family. They have 4 kids. One of them is older and has an old V8 Firebird. He sits in the car and revs the engine every day when he leaves or returns. He's literally been doing it for 3 years. You'd think it would get old by now. The younger son rides a dirt bike around and around the yard for HOURS. I called the township about that one because I couldn't imagine that would be legal in a development but apparently unless he's riding it on the sidewalks there's no problem. This house is also the hangout for just about every tween and teen in the neighborhood. They aren't bad people but they just have no idea how to live in close proximity to others.

It gets strange as here there was just a court case about a 5 and 7 year old being to loud when using the pool

I don't know how to say this without just saying it. Be very, very careful in dealing with this kid and his father. You don't want this kid taking potshots at your house or family, and I wouldn't doubt that it might happen.

I don't have a solution for your problem. There may be no solution. But, please exercise real caution.

Re: Need To Know How To Handle My Neighbor??

I was going to go out to a local range the other day to shoot. The lady who owns it informed me I couldn't. Seems she was being shut down. To use her words, "them city people started moving in, then decided they didn't like the noise"

Just saying.

I live out in the sticks. I ride my wheeler now and then, shoot guns now and then. My neighbor plays loud music now and then, other one runs a hot rod now and then.
I recently moved out there (2 years ago) although I had grown up in the small town/country environment. After about 6 months everyone started coming up and mentioning how glad they were to have us there. We help out when people need help. first name basis with local sheriff and town committee, and we never complain about how the people who have lived there all their lives live. I figure if I wanted to move there I should fit in with them.
I'm sure it can be very annoying to listen to it all day long, but I'm also sure he'll either run out of bullets and gas or he'll find something else to do.
I think you would go a long way towards making yourself more welcome there if you leave well enough alone. If you talk to the kid he will probably do it more just to irk you, could be the same with the old man. I would think it best to pretend you aren't bothered. Go shoot a little of your own out there, larger calibre of course.

Re: Need To Know How To Handle My Neighbor??

You're in a tough spot.

The neighbors themselves (parents) are alright, just the kid is annoying. How old is this "kid"?

Truth be told, country living requires the tolerance of four wheelers, guns, bonfires, BBQ's, farm machinery, and other noisey stuff...

I do sympathize with you; one neighbor kid is a PIA. I take it he's shooting a semi-auto rifle, correct?

I may be inclined to BUY the kid a bolt-action .22, and CCI's "CB Long" bullets. They're subsonic and have a very short trajectory. Since the kid just shoots for the heck of it, push him to "improve his marksmanship" by shooting at targets using a bolt-action and CB Longs. That way, he can shoot one round at a time, quietly, at pennies/targets all day long...

I realize "buying" your way out of the problem may not sit well, but if it works, would it be worth it?

I don't believe your situation will change unless you change it; and since it's your neighbors, I'd tread lightly going about how to change it. Getting the law involved, or any other "intrusive" method, will no doubt lead to future "problems" with this kid/parents...

How about putting a bullet hole in something (not valuable) on your property and basically say you tolerated the shooting when it didn't impact you but had to call in the sheriff as this is now a saftety issue.

I've thought and thought about it, and talked it over with the wife. I think I'm going to lay low for awhile and hope it gets better. As some of you have stated, school will be back in soon, and I know for a fact he doesn't come out during the winter.... he's lazy when it's cold. Maybe by next summer he will have grown out of it, or gotten his license. Either way ... I'll be better off. After all ... the kid will probably move out in a couple of years, and I get along with the parents. They are really nice people.

I 2nd this statement and think you are making a wise choice.. hell go out there and have a shooting contest with the kid and if you win he takes a few days off.. if your approach is decent he might respond. plus put yourself in his place he's in the sticks without much to do..

Yeah, lie to the cops, file a false report, get the kid in trouble with his parents for something he knows he didn't do.....That'll really fix things.

Re: Need To Know How To Handle My Neighbor??

I too live in the country. A few years back a neighbor kid a few houses and several hundred yards away was creating a problem. The bad thing was, we looked after this kid and babysat for him.

To make a long story short, he started vandalizing my mailbox. Had to buy a new box every month or so. I caught him in the act but that didn't end things.
It got to the point that whenever my box was destroyed, I went down the next night and vandalized their box. Infantile? You bet. But it made me feel better.

Seems to me the parents are the problem. Really nice people would not let their kid disturb the neighborhood. Have a barbecue and invite all the people that share your problem, and the kids parents. If the other neighbors know the purpose of the barbecue is to gently pressure the parents into doing something about the noise you may persuade them to make the change. If it's low key and not an attack it might work. If not, a few Crack's from the 50 bmg every time the parents are trying to enjoy some peace and quiet might help. :D

Speaking of mailboxes my brother in law had that problem and he made a new one out of 1/2" high carbon and a 10" I beam for the base. Needless to say the next time someone played mailbox baseball they got a big surprise.

I have been reading this post for the past few days and it seems like the opinions run from one extreme to the other. But in the end, calmer heads prevail. I moved from the big city of Tampa to 2.5 acres in this old chicken farming community, and am so glad to be here. And when the 4-wheelers show up or the dirt bikes or the guns are poppin I have to remind myself, God, I just love this place. I am so fortunate to be here. And I really mean it. :)

just let it sit school is about to start and he will get busy with that and sports. I am a kid and skateboard (I bet you store owners love us) and when a guy comes out and tells us "get the **** out of here or I will get your *** arrested" that just makes us want to come back and make as much noice as possible. Just talk to him nicely and ask him to quite down or go to the other side of the property (if he still does this during the school year)

Re: Need To Know How To Handle My Neighbor??

How about talking to the kid and mentioning you are interested in getting into shooting? Ask if you can come along on one of his 'range sessions' and offer to bring some ammo. Bring some hi vel, some regular, and some subsonic/cb ammo. Who knows, you may have fun, and also show him there are ways for him to shoot with less 'noise polution'. Maybe he'll even give you a ride on his quad! :D Try taking the 'mentor' approach rather than the 'crabby neighbor' line and I'll bet you can work things out.

It's also one of my pet peeves where people move to a different area and try to make it like what they just left, or complain about well known 'features' of the area. Don't buy a house near an airport or range then start b*tchin' about the noise! :(

Does the kid ride the ATV on the road? If so you could call the police and report that. The police won?t tell them they had a complaint and if your lucky they will confiscate the 4 wheeler. That might help with one problem. Good luck with the shooting.

Re: Need To Know How To Handle My Neighbor??

So many options, and much good advice so far.

1) IF you can live with it and/or somehow befriend or mentor the kid, that'd be best.

2) Now help me understand... The family owns 1/2 acre, and you own 3 acres.
a) Where exactly is he 4-wheeling? On whose property? I would hardly think he's circling on just their 1/2 acre.
b) Where exactly is he shooting? His property? If not, whose? Does he have permission to shoot on that property?
c) Does the property owner have the right to fence and post 'No Trespassing / No Hunting'?
d) If it's on public property, are there any local ordinances restricting any behaviour or times?

3) The state Department of Environmental Quality (or whatever Kentucky has) might be interested about lead pollution of a flowing stream.

4) Michigan prohibits discharge of a firearm within x feet of a residence -- does Kentucky have something like that?

5) The suggestion of just talking with the Judge Executive sounded good, too.

Before you take action on any of these, really think if it's worthwhile.

Will it stop when he returns to school? If it's restricted to after-school hours, is that ok? Would his folks be willing to restrict to certain hours (e.g. before 9 pm only?)
