I need your help again! I bought a VRO part # 438097 for 86 150HP J before and you guys advice me to go with VRO2. So I ordered a brand new VRO # 5007423 on eBay for $200. when received the VRO had oil/grease in it has a sticker on it that shows 5004554 plus four wire NOT three wire with one wire adapter.
So I complained and here is the seller response below:

"I am very disappointed to read your e-mail, I ship VRO pumps all the time, and I have full stock. I have no problem sending you another VRO, but please return it and I will give you a refund. If I ship you another VRO, you will receive exactly what you got, a new VRO.

All VRO pumps ship with oil and grease on the unit, BRP/OMC do this to keep everything nice and lubricated. ALL VRO pumps have a sticker on them with a CASTING number, this is NOT a part number, and the part number is outside the box.

ALL VRO pumps are FOUR wire, but if you look closely your pump comes with a 3 wire adapter in the bag. Please visit any dealer and ask them to show you there VRO pump # 5007423, it will be exact to what I shipped out to you.

This is the 3 wire VRO you need, if you like give me your model or year and HP again and I will check. I?ve been in the business for many years, this is the first time I hear this. "

My question Is this truth or boloney?

Thanks in advance

Describe the outlet fitting on the pump.

Here are the pictures, sorry they are not clear.

The fittings are not connected and they still in the plastic. All the VRO looks the same, how can you tell which model from looking at pump if there is no numer attached to it.

Thank you again.

All "VROs" are not the same. That pic doesn't come up. Mail it to dhadley50@aol.com or just describe what it looks like. Every version was different.

OK, that's not a VRO pump. That's an OMS pump which is the latest & greatest. You made a good deal. It pumps a (nearly) constant 50:1 rather than a variable 150:1 to 50:1 and has all the latest electronics.

This is what drives folks crazy. People call every oil pump there is a "VRO" pump. Even pumps on other brands of motors. Even the guy selling the pump called it a VRO even though he obviously knows it isn't. This is where all the confusion starts. You'll now have the best oil injection pump OMC / BRP made. But I guarantee you that if you go to a parts guy in the future and ask for VRO parts, you'll get the wrong parts.

Anytime. Let us know how you make out. I think you'll really like it. Just don't use the remote fill kit on the oil tank.

Yep, the pumps are in a plastic bag and they are oily from the factory.

There should be an instruction sheet with the pump that shows how to wire in the 4th wire for the alarm system, and how to choose and install the correct pulse and fuel outlet fittings.

Here is a link for more info on the "VRO/OMS" pump:

Re: Need your advice VRO ?

Thank you again for the info.
I installed the OMS pump this weekend. We tried to start the motor it feels like it wants to start but it didn?t. All six cylinders compression were about 80. Today I took the boat to the lake. The engine wants to start but it didn?t. We open the chock solenoid; we turned the red nob90 degree to the left. The motor starts right away so we drove like that. There was no power the max speed was about 15 mph. We stop it and check the engine, the right 3 cylinders were hot and the left 3 cylinder were cold. We start the motor again for a little while the motor stop and when we turn on the key we can hear nothing. I just bough this boat it?s 1986 150HP V6 Johnson. Any help would be appreciated.

Symptoms sound like fouled/restricted carburetors.

Describe "hot".

80 PSI is pretty low.

Re: Need your advice VRO ?

I come up with 0439076 as the carburetor rebuild kit # for a 1986 150 Johnson.That # supercedes 0393872.

What you're describing is one bank not firing.

Re: Need your advice VRO ?

before you buy a power pack you should at least figure out why your bank is not firing.

i would check the input from the stator and trigger.
and compare that to the power pack output.

if you have good input +/- 250v stator, and +/- 4v trigger, (check the manual) and bad output replace the pp

if you have bad input and bad output your pp might be still good. also check the pp ground wire might be dirty ground.

You will need a multimeter and a peak reading voltage adapter(DVA adapter from CDI)

most likely it is your pp but you want to make sure before buying a whole new ignition system
after a new OMS pump and now a new pp you might not want to spend to much on this old lady.
has it been a saltwater engine?
i would check out the cylinder walls before buying expensive parts.

thats my 2 cents

Re: Need your advice VRO ?

Before you start playing parts roulette, Do a spark test and a compression test with all of the spark plugs removed. Also check the thermostats.

You should be controlling your primer solenoid with the ignition switch by pushing in on the key; The red nob should be alligned with the cylindrical part of the solenoid during normal starting and running.
