Hello all!! I'm new to this site and working on boats altogether.I/m hoping that I can ask some question without sounding retarded. I have a 1976 Merc C1500LPTT motor on the back of a 1976 Check Mate boat. I was told that when I got the boat that the motor needed a water pump. I have located the water pump and replaced the lower part of a the motor with another one that I recv. when I got the boat. My question is no matter what position I have the throttle in and or forward / reverse the propeller does spin. I thought that I had remembered seeing trucks pulling boat down the roan and the propeller spinning freely .Im not sure if this is supposed to be this way or not. When you try and turn it one way it sounds like it just clicks and the other way it turns the motor over. I dont know if this is right but it seems to make no difference where or how the forward or reverse it seems to be the same on the motor prop. any ideas. or any info. Im lost and need help. I do not have a battery for this yet and will be getting one soon. thanks all in advance!!

You did not align the shift shaft before installing the lower unit you need to drop it down and put the unit and engine in revese gear then reinstall the unit.

Re: Needed info 1976 Merc 150 H.P

well I know that the spleen is in, however I dont know which way the shaft needs to be facing?? When doing this however should always put it in reverse and then align the spleen?? what happens if you turn the shaft in the bottom off the motor, could that be off?? what I mean is what if the spleen is off in the bottom of the motor and the top is set to neutral??
So should they spin freely?
Are you saying the boat should be in reverse when installing the bottom half of the motor??
and thanks for the advice!!

normal operation shifter in forward postion prop when turned should turn motor when, turned other way should click. shifter in reverse postion turning prop will turn motor each way. if you redo it put both shifter and lower unit in reverse, then can trun prop to help line up the splines

Right now if i turn the top of the prop to the right which is clockwise it just clicks and counter clockwise it turns the motor over. That it with the shifter in neutral. and no matter what it dont change. I will go out and drop the bottome have of the motor and try to realign the spline and see what happens. Good luck to me!! thanks again. I know see why u guys are the very top link off google for boat forums. thanks all! great site.:D
