I just got the wife a new car . Today I saw where a cat had been on it and he left a few scratch marks in the friggin clear coat, Tonight I have set out a capture cage to try and get him and more than likely will soon. Question is what to do with the cat. I love animals (we have 3 cats) and wouldnt hurt it but Im not sure who owns it . Do I take it to the pound? do I wait for someone to post a lost kitty sign? Do I put it in a cage in my front yard and wait for the owner to see it and then refuse to give it back until he pays to have my car painted or pro polished? The car will be in my garage later but for now its outside?

Assuming it was not a rhetorical question, you're in a tough spot. Assuming you have to live with your neighbors you cant go ballistic on them asking to repair your paint without starting trouble. If it was me I would catch the cat so you are pretty sure you know which one it is ( you probably have more than one running around your yard at night) and then let it go. Every time after that you see that cat give him a shot with the water hose, throw a shoe and or get a meaner cat. He wont come back.

If you do find out it's a neighbors cat asking him to do somehting about it wont get you any where. If he lets the cat outside it will go anywhere it pleases and there is nothing the owner can do about it. ...if it is an outside cat there is no way the owner will be able to keep it inside for the rest of its life.

Take the cat on....make it not want to come back. ( dont hurt it though...I like cats:))

You can always chain a pit bull to the bumper. With my luck someone would steal the pit and key the paint...ANIMAL :D

Catch it or take a pic of it on the car. Their home owners ins. should fix it if it's in your driveway. Happened with my dog climbing on neighbors new cars. Statefarm payed $2k for new paint on 2 cars.
If he scratches up your boat, kill it!!

Re: neighbors cat scratchin up my car

When I was 17 I had worked at a grocery store for 2 yrs. to save up enough money for my first truck (a used '86 isuzu 4X4 which was the best truck I've ever had). I washed it about every 3 days and waxed it about every month I was so proud of it. A cat kept leaving tracks all over it for weeks so I devised a plan.....I set a raccoon leg-hold trap between a crack in the fence in the back yard. I lived in front of a small-town hospital....you'll soon see the importance. Well, I forgot that I set the darn trap for a couple of days and didn't check it before school. A few days later, I sat down for supper and my dad casually asks shortly thereafter--"well, what's been going on, Jeremiah Johnson?" I didn't understand the significance of the comment 'cause I had forgotten about my "fence set". I gave him a funny look and said "nothin much". He quizzed me further with no results from me and I guess he finally understood that I had no idea what he was talking about. He then proceeded to remind me about my trap and tell me that my "set" had been successful. A group of old ladies at the hospital had heard a crazy noise across the field toward my house and they could see a cat jumping around. They called the cops and our poor old town policeman came to investigate. He found the cat in the trap and proceeded to TRY to extract him from it. Of course, the cat went berzerk and according to the policeman, he nearly had to shoot the rascal it was scratching and biting him so badly.
Luckily for me, I narrowly avoided a beating probably because my stepmother hated that darn cat, too, for the same reason I did and because my dad probably appreciated my outstanding trapping skills.:) My dad was very strict and normally would have got me good for such an idiotic stunt----he also hates cats like me, though. Now, after nearly 20yrs., when I see 'ol J.L. (the policeman--he is a good guy, by the way) he still ribs me about that dang cat incident.
The moral of the story------I FEEL YOUR PAIN!!!!
But I have no recommendations since I narrowly escaped my previous "cat problem" with my rear intact.
Good luck with YOUR cat,
JBJ:p

easiest solution is clean out the garage. which is more important, the junk or the car. garages are for cars and boats, not junk. don't be a horder.

Re: neighbors cat scratchin up my car

Hundreds of thousands if not millions of cats are euthenised (sp) every year. The pests have a short gestation period and can produce about as many as rats can.

Its nice to feel nice warm and fuzzy off of the cute critters. However, taking them to the country and letting them out only causes problems for the wildlife and those living in the country. I know because I end up dealing with them.

I will admit that I don't care for cats. Especially those that are released for others to take proper care of. I feel that cats should be treated as dogs. They should be restrained and licensed just like dogs.

Live trap them and contact a shelter that is out of town...........SS

Simple.
Trap it and bring it to the nearest Chinese Food restaurant.
Problem solved!

Where I live, Animal Control won't take a cat. If its a problem cat, they say shoot it.

Re: neighbors cat scratchin up my car

My wife wants me to "do away with" a neighborhood cat - it has been peeing in her flower garden and when you open the back door the odor of cat **** is horrific! What is amuzing about the whole thing is she is the cat lover and I am the cat hater! I don't really want to do it because I don't know whose cat it is (and one of my neighbors is a State Trooper- God forbid if it were his!)!

There are laws about live trapping cats here - unless they are ferral. In a housing development, how can you tell the difference? If they are loose, they are ferral, right?

Re: neighbors cat scratchin up my car

Thanks for the ideas. First my garage isnt full of junk but another car and shop equipement at the moment. (I have 6 cars) As far as catching the cat and letting it go with a warning the end result will be my car will continue to be screwed up. Too late to deal with after I need a new paint job. And in our city WE DO have an ordinance that prevents ANY animal owners from letting their pets run free. To avoid having war with the negligent owner I will just take any cats I catch to the pound, perhaps a pound 25 miles away in another town. That should solve it. I do like the idea of taking photos and making them pay but I am usually in bed between 1 am and 6am when the cats arent..

Re: neighbors cat scratchin up my car

I have the same problem. The neighbor's cat uses my truck to get up into the loft of the carport at night. I am going to try putting some wax paper on the hood. It worked before to teach the cat not to get on the kitchen counter. The cat jumps up but the wax paper does not hold and the cat falls to the floor. It's not an experience our cat wanted to repeat in the kitchen. I've never tried it on the car. If that doesn't work, I might build him a ramp or some other means to get up there. He keeps the birds and squirrels out.

Just spread some cayane pepper around the car, available in spice section of any store. Cat will get it on some part of them or smell and will leave that area alone.

Re: neighbors cat scratchin up my car

.... Question is what to do with the cat?

That's what they make burlap sacks for, isn't it? I, for the life of me, cannot figure out who made owners liable for their dogs but not for their cats. If an animal cannot be controlled and the owner not held liable then an animal should not be allowed as a pet. IMHO, that makes cats fair game. In reality, it should make the cat owners fair game!
