I think thats the right term. I need to put some on my Tundra to help my wife get in and out a little easier. Will they do the trick? Anything to look out for or are they just pretty much like running boards?

Re: Nerf bars??

Nerf bars and Running boards are pretty much the same thing.......serve the same purpose. Usually it comes down to what will look better on your vehicle.

Running boards are wider and give you a much better step, so that is something you may want to look at since your wife will be using them. If you get Nerf bars I would get the 4" oval instead of 3" for that same reason.

I have Nerf bars on my truck and my lady doesn't have an issue with them............plus I like the way they look better than running boards.

The Colorado I had came with the "nerf" bars and I took em off . for me they didn't stick out enough or low enough to be used as a step . I put on the larger tube style bridal step . They were more comfortable and useable , instead of in the way decor .

Re: Nerf bars??

Sorry guys, Nerf bars are on the front of the vehicle, those are tubular steps that you have pictured. Work at a dealership and that is the terminology we use.

Really?? I thought the chrome bars on the front of trucks were "bull" bars.

I have a few buddies that race at Slinger and they told me that "nerfing" is when you bump someone on the side to make a pass....and that on small single seat dirt racers they put a bar on the side of the car to protect the side and tires.......a "nerf" bar if you will, and that is how the term "nerf" came to be interchangeable with tube steps.

I have always been under the impression that step bars, boss bars, tube steps or step tubes, and nerf bars are all interchangeable terms.

I agree Pony. Everything I have read so far about them has said the same thing. Seems like its just what the company wants to call them.

I have a 3/4 ton that is fairly high. I got the running boards for my wife. She gets both feet on the board and then goes the rest of the way into the truck. If you are getting them because she needs them, get the boards. They are much more functional.

I know the bumpers on my Bradley GT are not called bumpers, but they are called (by the factory) NERF bars. I too have always thought Nerf referred to as a push bar for the front or rear of the vehicle. I have also heard guys in the super modified dirt track cars call them Nerf bars as well. The ones on the sides of trucks/vans to me have always been referred to as "Running Boards".

Well the only ones I have seen that last long are the SS ones and even those have to be kept clean.

Re: Nerf bars??

Obviously the term has undergone a change in definition over the years. In the '50s and '60s, it referred to pushing someone else's car with your car, usually to start it. "My car won't start." "I'll nerf you."

Urban dictionary has 23 definitions, none having anything to do with pushing (well, drugs maybe). Wikipedia thinks the term originates with Nerf balls and other squishy toys.

Official definition: A nerf bar is a bar on the front of your vehicle that allows you to push another vehicle without boogering up the front of your vehicle.

I have been running black powdercoated nerfs on my truck and Jeep for going on 20 years. I have learned that you gotta seal up the ends or they will trap water and rust out. The best thing to do is seal the ends and then drill some drain holes in them for just in case water gets in anyway.

I run the black ones as well and they've saved my butt a few times backing over piles of garbage and debris. 4" oval and I've never laid a foot on them but my kids do use em for the purpose you mention. If u go looking for "Nerf bars" or "running boards"for the side of the truck you'll find what you need. It's about as innocent as calling the deck of a boat a floor. Some people will want to battle semantics and other will want to help.

I had them on my first ML. They did give vertically challenged people a bit easier entry, but they sure screwed up a lot of my trousers by smearing dirt on them.

I don't have them on Blue 2 and I won't on anything else.

Re: Nerf bars??

had to chime in again, do your research, buy good quality with a good warranty against rust or chrome delamination. the black painted ones fade quickly and rust within a couple of years. again do your research, a few dollars more today will pay off tomorrow
