i found a motor in the local ads, guy has a 09 9.9hp bigfoot for sale NEW never used. He said was going to use it for his jonboat but instead he went out and upgraded to a bassboat and no longer needs motor..still has 4yr warranty..comes with rolling stand & tank for $1700.00 think its worth doing??

i fish alot of 10hp limited lakes is reason for staying down in the 9.9 range and wanting a new or newer motor " less then 3yrs old". I called dealer they quoted me $2100.00 out the door price so figure i could save some on a new motor. He bought it new from the local bass pro - never used it.

Sounds like a heck of a deal to me. Make sure you do the research (or maybe someone will chime in) about what makes a big-foot a big-foot. It may be geared lower to push a pontoon or something like that and be inappropriate for your intended usage.

All the dealers quote the retail especially in the beginning of the season. I had the same quotes for $2100 when I bought my 9.9 Merc in 2005 new. But I kept calling around since there are so many Merc dealers and many will discount especially in periods of a slow economy. I found one that sold it to me for $1500.

Just put your zip code in at Mercs site and keep calling the dealers starting from where you live to further out. I'll drive a few miles to save $600 any day :D

He's quoting you 2010 retail for a motor that's already a year old. Merc is trying to do away with model years so the can stick it to you in future years by you buying an outboard that can now be sitting around with the seals drying out for 5 years and they can sell it to you as a new current model year.

That Bigfoot you are looking at (for what I know of bigfoots) is that they have a lower gear ratio and designed for pontoon boats. I'm sure someone will jump in and tell me I'm wrong.

i know the bigfoot has lower gearing and is more setup up towards a kicker type motor for sailboats/pontoons..does that mean it wont go as fast on top end as a standard 9.9 would? I guess what would be the pro's & con's of having a bigfoot on a 1448 grizzly tracker all weld?

Yes, it won't go as fast would be my guess! If you are using it for trolling why care about the top end. If you are using it for the only motor to push that boat you are OK on the 10hp lake, but that's all.

You don't mention where you live so I don't know if the boat dealers around your area are open or your lake is frozen over.

The best thing to do is give the guy a deposit based on you test driving one from a dealer in the area on your boat. You really can't ask a guy that is selling a new motor which was never used to test drive it because then it's not new anymore.

Check around with a few dealers to see if one has a bigfoot you could test drive. I doubt that a place that rents boats would have bigfoots on their rigs so you would have to find a dealer.

A 9.9 is bad enough trying to push a 14.5 rig and if you try and put 3 people on board fagadaboutit (been the tried that already). If top end is your goal getting from place to place for $1700 I personally would not buy it without trying one out with your gear onboard.

New ones usually come with a 6 gal tank anyway and a stand is cheap too (like $30).

Big Foot motors rarely work well on planing hulls -- to a point. They are indeed intended as "working engines" as a kicker or trolling motor on a relative big boat or on a pontoon on a HP limited body of water. That engine may also have a long shaft which creates another issue on a planing hull in that handling can get ugly because the prop gets too far below the bottom of the boat. Do your research on this engine. Chances are the seller thought it was a good deal also and found out it is not what he expected.
