Re: New Achilles LSI-365 and 25 HP Yamaha

When we tow the boat with the Mini Cooper I just put the bow in the back of the mini and secure the front tow ring of the boat to the seat belt attachment with a cam lock strap.

My pickup has a small pop up camper on it with a hitch mount 2 step platform. I simply tie the bow line to the top step and drive away. This photo is actually the smaller achilles we has before the LSI 365.

Re: New Achilles LSI-365 and 25 HP Yamaha

Thanks for the big smile this morning! Those are definitely beach launch wheels and aren't intended for towing on the road. What the hey, if you can get away with it I guess it is good to go! But I must say to anyone reading this thread that this whole set up violates so many vehicle codes that the ticket you would get here in CA would make your head spin. No proper tow attachment, no chains or any kind of secondary restraint, no trailer lights, obscuring your vehicle tail lights with a load, no flag on an extended load, unsafe vehicle operation... Heck, I have a full trailer rig and I have been visually inspected at the launch ramp numerous times. I guess things are pretty slack inland. You couldn't even roll the parking lot at my state park with that rig. Get spotted by the CA highway patrol and they would not let you move away at all. It would be an alternate vehicle carrying the boat or a quick trip to the impound lot. You could probably pull the boat at the ramp, go 8 feet and break down the vessel to go in your car, but 8 miles! Still making me smile, have fun.

Re: New Achilles LSI-365 and 25 HP Yamaha

nobrainsd, your points are valid. My 8 mile trip was on a dirt road in rural central Michigan. I am willing to accept responsibilities for my actions. The typical usage is in campgrounds from the rv to the launch.

I am looking closely into getting one of these http://www.castlecraft.com/small_inflatables_trailer.htm as long as I can disassemble it enough to fit in one of the storage bays in the motor home.

I get even more smiles when I carry the boat on top of the mini:)

Get the mini on the boat and I'll really be busting up! Everyonce in a while I wish for a larger boat, but a lightweight inflatable sure does open up a lot of possibilities. Always looking forward to more pics!

By the way, are you using the standard prop that came with the engine? Have you tried different props yet?

I've ordered the wheels to make it easier to launch the boat, should have them soon...

I ordered a new cupped prop to try before I trim the transom. If it doesn't change anything I will have a spare prop. The person at propco, claimed this would fix my problem. He sounded very knowledgeable and described my problem with very little input from me. Time will tell.

I got my prop today and will not get to try it till the weekend. The difference is noticeable. The white one is the original.

The new prop eliminated the ventilation problem. It doesn't feel like I lost or gained any speed.

Jim, that's great! Would hate to see you cut into the transom, it is nicely sealed...

Can you share what prop model/spec you got and where?

Thanks again!

Jim,

Are those wheels in this photo different of "the Wheel Away" wheel system?

And can you post a pic of the wheel away's on the back of your transon?
Maybe of attached and not attached?

The misses has been curious for wheel aways for our 10'3" caribe RIB.

We have found this wheel system on "cruisers forum" in the "dinghy" section when searching for dinghy wheels.
Check it out at "DaNard Marine".
Would you consider this system to be an upgrade to your west marine product? Perhaps west marine couldn't be competetive in pricing with these wheels?

Thanks

Re: New Achilles LSI-365 and 25 HP Yamaha

masonboro, the denard wheel system appears to be heavier duty and a more thought out system. I would consider them an upgrade as compared to the wheel-a-weigh. I am inflating the boat today and will take some photos.

I did bend one of the legs on my wheel-a-weigh system the other day. I had the boat fully loaded and pushed the boat into a muddy hole by accident. I replaced both original legs that are 3/4" X 1 1/2" rectangular tubing with 3/4" X 1 1/2" solid aluminum stock. I can't really blame the wheel-a-weigh system for failing as I exceeded the weight rating.

I will post a picture later today.

Re: New Achilles LSI-365 and 25 HP Yamaha

Jim, did you get any advice re props with pitch of 13 or 15? The one you got is almost the same pitch as the original. If you normally have two people only, you likely could have picked up some speed by going for higher pitch. That's what I intend to try...

The prop I received is the prop that their guru recommended for my particular issue. It is a cupped prop. Let me know how your prop change goes.

Just ordered three props from the same place- 11, 13 and 15 pitch. Will find out what works better...

Jim, how do you carry the engine in your RV? Do you just drop it on a side or do you have a stand? Please share a pic if you have one. I just carry it in the back of my SUV and I am thinking there must be a better way...

Re: New Achilles LSI-365 and 25 HP Yamaha

Did a 72 mile trip today and measured top speed (GPS) with standard prop, 2 people and some gear. The range is 26.4 mph to 27.6 mph depending on wind direction. With waves 16 mph is comfortable following the waves but as soon as I turn around to face the waves I have to drop down to displacement mode at under 6 mph to keep the ride comfortable. Is this consistent with your experience?

Dimitry, I just simply lay the motor down the bast way it fits.

Your speeds seem similar to mine. After I moved the forward seat aft to the ride for my wife was much better and I could go at a faster speed in rougher water. It seems the closer to the transom the smoother the ride in rough water.

wow, new seats? Is this a standard product or did you cook them up yourself? How do you attach them to the boat?
