New and needing help on a 1965 Starcraft

Hi all. I've been lurking around and trying to pick up on things... it ain't sinkin in. I bought my first boat the other day. I liked the style and it has character, thought it would be like restoring an old car... wrong. I am determined though to get it in the water and back to good shape. Plus the warden won't let me live it down if I don't, lol. Her first words was.. you didn't.

The paperwork says 1965 Starcraft but doesn't say what kind. According to the links here it looks like the Jupiter V. I may be wrong. The engine I looked up the model number. It is an 1964 Evinrude Lark VI 45hp.

The man I bought it from was going to put a new ignition switch, didn't happen. He left all the wires just hanging there. Where would I find a diagram or buy book on this? Where could I buy a switch at? The top frame. The one on the boat is good but I look like Lurch sitting in it, needs a bit of height.

Also there are a few things missing, like what I think went there was a mirror on the dash. Where does one buy parts at? I would like to maybe do it like some of my cars, a few upgrades but the integrity of the vehicle remains as it was made.

Thanks in advance.

If it's the boat in your avatar then it's not a Jupiter...the Jups are aluminum hulls. Yours looks like a fiberglass rig based on the raised bow cap.

Either way it's a classic Starcraft, welcome to the club!

Welcome Anthony. We love pics as you may have read and they will help us help you. Always liked looking at Lurch. :)

Original parts are difficult to come by. I have a search on ebay for SC parts but few turn up. There is also a search for vintage boat parts.

I would see if a local boat shop can help with an ignition switch. And they often have scrapped boats that supply working parts to us.

If that is your boat in your profile it looks like a fiber glasser. There are a few SC glass restorers on this website but most of us have aluminum boats.

Make your wife proud. ;)

Welcome to iboats! I can't quite tell from your avatar pic but is this a fiberglass boat? If so, it's not a Jupiter as that's an aluminum. Doesn't look like the '65 brochure is complete. Looking at '64 it could be a Bahama or a Newport. Post any engine quetions you have in the Johnson/Evinrude section for the best responses.

Thank you, I hope to learn enough here to get her on the water this year.

The boat is fiberglass so I guess it isn't one, maybe that should have been my first question. Any idea what it is? I loved the design and wanted something I could play with and we could enjoy. Is there anywhere in the boat that I might look to see what it is?

I got one going there too. I looked through the brochures and forgot about the canvas top. I wonder if it could be the Rivera?

Curious if you ever got your answer? I just bought the same boat and the previous owner told me the boat was a 70 with a 50 HP V5 Johnson. I have now found out the motor is a 1965 75HP Johnson so I am suspicious the boat is a 1965 as well as I don't see anything like it in the 1970 catalog photos.

Guys you gotta give us more pics if you want to know what you have. Inside shot, one from the side , the bow, and the transom standing behind the boat. also measurements would help-length, width at the widest point, and transom hieght from the floor.

I have a ton of brochures here and really don't mind doing a little research for you.

Started my own thread with photos. Believe mine and Hilly7's are the same boat, a Bahama. Link to my thread

H7 boats are not that different than restoring an old car. Different yes and there is a learning curve that goes with it.

Buy the book "The Fiberglass Boat Repair Manual" by Allan H. Vaitses

I got mine used at half.com for under $10.00 and it was in really good condition. It's invaluble for learning fiberglass reapir.

Good luck.
