Hey there everyone!!!! I just picked up this beautiful POS the other day and looked good at the time!!!! When i checked her outthere was a bunch of stuff under the splash well and looked as best i could without pissin the guy off...(i had already talked him sown from 1200 to 550 for valid reasons but nothing i though was beyond my grasp. Well i decided to do some digging and checked out the knee brace.... now im at a loss.... on one side its completely broken off at the top between the top 2 bolts and on the other side its broken off completwly.... is this worth fixing???can i simply just weld onto it?? Or is there other things to look for and do? Ill post pics in a bit but thought id just throw it out there. Long time iboats reader first time poster.

We need some pics to kind of tell you what we think. There isn't anything on here that we haven't seen and/or fixed. Bluefin 16 is our resident structural specialist.

89 days ago I drug in this piece of carp.

as of 13:15 today she looked like this.

So can it be fixed absolutely.

Usually with a knee brace standard procedure is to rivet new aluminum angle to the old knee brace.

You have all the templates, you can either rivet new aluminum knee brace, or take it out and to a machine shop they can make an entirely new one.

You stole that for $550.00

Re: new beat up 16' ss

hopefully tear down will start this friday cuz tomorrow the guy i sold the merc 115 to is gunna come pick it up. i didnt wanna have to be the one to take it off so ya  so with the price of the boat, minus the engine sale, not including gas.... the boat and trailer cost me 100 bucks.. :D pretty happy about it!

side question.... is there really any starcraft owners on the west coast??? alot of the rebuild threads i read were either central or eastern states. they almost NEVER pop up on CL over here and havent really seen any around in all these years... am i just blind or????

Very fixable, BM. OH - Welcome to TinLand, home of lost causes rejuvenated.

Transom wood, floors and metal repair and she'll be well on the road to recovery. BTW - how is the splashwell? Often when the knee braces crack, so does the S/W.

hahaha! thanks! tin land is like home to me!!! ive fished out of a 68 14' valco tin that i did all the work on! the splashwell all cracked to heck! i was just gunna take it out and have a buddy weld it back up from the inside, then apply a thin layer of jb weld on top of the cracks after the weld to make it look good again. or is there a better way of doing this?

and one of the transom caps is cracked too >.> i think the PO wasnt all there... overpowered with a 115 i6 and a swim step improperly mounted that he said people would just sit on in the water... the rivets holding the transom skin on are all there and intact but it looks like the damn transoms starting to fall off xD not to mention all that flex >.>

I am hoping to have all Starcrafters everywhere covered in cheap transom caps soon.

I had the brief thought of splashing the 16'SS with the 115 from the 18'ss just for giggles it seemed like fun.

Take some pics of the splashwell, then you'll get some ideas. We have a source for new corner caps, but get a pic of that too, it may be fixable.

The combination of overpowering, weak transom wood and PO ignorance is never a good thing. But some of the members have overcome worse. Stick around with us and you'll do OK.

Well then sig looks like im a confirmed west coast owner hahaha ill take some more pics right now then post em up later! I though of it too! But after seeing my boat for the fist time, my mind quickly changed. I dont even wanna splash till i get all this BS straightend out ... im just happy the floors good enough for a template.. hahaha how do you guys think a 55 will do on the back? I just dont wanna go too crazy cuz this is my first powerboat. Everything else has been oars, trolling motor, or someone elses i wasnt allowed to drive xD

allow me to somewhat specify.. how would a mid-70's(not sure of exact year) 2 stroke 'rude do on the back ya think? or would it be too underpowered?

Re: new beat up 16' ss

Follow the 80% rule. Your hull is rated at 85 horsepower meaing you should put at least a 68 horsepower on it for Satisfactory performance so round up and go with a 70. Personally I am a huge fan of the Johnson/Evinrude 75 hp motors for these boats They are max rated at 85hp which goes into 4 cylinder range, you only lose 10 hp (negligible) you gain fuel economy and save alot on weight too.

A 55hp would probably be ok but I would think it would be extremely marginal, better to have the power and not need it than need it and not have it. Especially by the time you load passengers and fishing gear full fuel tanks and other stuff.

If I were building one of these as a long term keeper I would put a 3 cylinder Yamaha 90hp on the back of it.

Yeah - a 70-75 would be a good motor on a 16' SS.

Re: new beat up 16' ss

Welcome to the Tin-sanity.

West coast, oh how I miss thee..... Not the cost of living, but pretty much everything else....

I would probably put an aluminum angle backer on the backside of the splashwell cracks, rather then weld them. IF your welding buddy is exceptional aluminum welder, you might let him weld it. Welding aluminum, when done incorrectly, can actually weaken the aluminum or work harden it, which can lead to new problems.

GREAT boat & trailer for $100! Congrats!

Re: new beat up 16' ss

I second JB's comments, Although I do love the looks of a nice TIG weld on aluminum, welding these tin cans is usually not a good idea. The cracks usually exist in a stressed area, Most of these boats were made from 5052-H32 aluminum and welds will weaken the material further. , the best bet is rivet a patch over the cracks and seal it.

Never woulda thought of that xD i got the motor off last night and all i can say about the transom is wow... i can see why that motor looked like it was gunna fall off..... pics tonight >->
