Re: new boat please help

Try it this way; look at the engine from the rear and you will see that the cylinders on the right are higher than the ones on the left. The top right cylinder is number one. The next highest is number 2 which is on the left. The next highest, #3 is on the right, and the lowest, #4 is on the left.

"There are two powerpacks. The port [left from rear] pack services 2 and 4, The starboard pack services 1 and 3."

If what you see looks like that picture, your motor is not a 1979 and all bets are off.

OK, it is 1973- 1977. look on the top of the left cylinder bank for a quarter-sized convex seal that looks like a freeze plug. It will have numbers on it that we will need. Look on the transom bracket on the port
side, for a 1" X 3" plate with model and serial numbers on it.

It just might also say in big bold friendly letters on top of the carb airbox.

Mine says "77 85hp Timing 26*" In 1" high font. (Or whatever the timing actually is - I'm not looking at it now).

Re: new boat please help

Yes, that is the 1977 85HP model. I think iwombat's been working on the same model, so maybe I will step out for a while.

BTW, now that you know the model number, go to the BRP parts catalog site and print out the diagrams and parts lists for your motor - It will hellp with the work that you are doing.

Classic fuel delivery problem.Take the advice of these guys. They know what they are doing.Get carbs rebuilt and fuel system checked..:D, Or at least hook up a small fuel tank with fresh fuel and about 4 cans of seafoam!

Re: new boat please help

the motor tilt would not make that big of a difference. have you tried running a remote fuel tank? I assume the boat has a built in tank, correct? The Seafoam will help clean the carbs if they are not completely plugged up.Its a last chance thing to try before carb rebuilds..
Nobody thinks your dumb! we all had to start learning somewhere;)

Re: new boat please help

One can in the 20 gallon fuel tank is a maintenance load. You want to do a real decarb and clean the carbon out of the combustion chambers, rings, exhaust etc., so you have to get it much more concentrated.

Go over to the Engine FAQ Forum and look for the decarb thread. You will find mention of Capt. Bob Dunkelberger and his method of decarbing with Seafoam. That is a really good way to do it.
