Yeah I thought about that. Found some nice ones on CL but I kinda like having the project. I got the boat for free so anything I do is only making it better.

The transom actually seems like its pretty solid. I can't find any soft spot anywhere yet. But I will be looking...not sure I want to get into structural stuff. I'm a body and paint man on cars and trucks so I may do it...idk yet. I'm pretty confident in my abilities!

Yeah. I called mercury marina and asked them directly. The actual piece that I need is the bellhousing . New its 1200$. But I also dont know ...

Find another shop. The retail price of a new bell-housing, directly from Mercury is only $698...

Chris, any chance the bell housing of my parts boat 1979 228 mercruiser would fit his transom plate? I know the engine mounts are different, but what about just the bell housing, gimbal ring etc. nitro could have it all dirt cheap.

It will fit, but... Yours is the old style MC-1, with the rounded design, he has an Alpha One, with the new, square design... (but in a pinch, it should fit.)

Gimbal ring is totally different.

That's crazy!! When I spoke with the guy at mercury marine he's the one that told me 1200 for just the bellhousing. 700 is way better but I'd still rather have the whole set up already put together....lol

OK...I was lost on this today when I spoke with the guy from mercury marine. He was asking about the dolt design. Whether it was splined or square. I have no idea what he was talking about. So I told him the bottom of it was round because I assumed he was referring to the big pin thing that goes thru the top of the gimbal. Its still in so how am I supposed to know if it is square or sllined? He assumed it was the spline one and that's what he priced me. I told him it was the alpha one but I dont know if that matters or not.

Nitro, your right the gimble Ring has a couple of different top pins. Do you need the gimble. Ring or just the bell housing? If just the bell housing I have one as I mentioned above private message me if interested.

Well technically I only need the bellhousing but since I was given the boat with it already in pieces and I dont know how any of this goes together and I am pretty sure I dont have all the parts I am gonna try to find the whole assembly already put together where all I have to do is try to get it on the boat and hooked up. Thank you tho for the offer. I can't really afford anything rite now tho. This will be a tax time project or if my settlement from my wreck comes in I'll get it then...lol.

Yeah, that's an MC-1....

This is the later ones (1983 on). Notice the more squared off design of the top of the bell-housing.

Makes no difference, square or splined, for the top swivel pin. Bell-housing is the same for both, and still only $698...

$1200 may be for a gimbal ring kit. That's does NOT include a bell-housing....

Can confirm, yes that bell-housing will fit in a later gimbal ring. In fact, if you look up the number for the earlier bell-housing (the MC-1) it supersedes to the later, Alpha One bell-housing....

Just checked up. Both square-square and square-splined swivel pins look round from the bottom. The lower section of both pins is the 'square' section. The ONLY way to see what you have is to look on the inside of the gimbal housing and look at the top of the swivel shaft, where the steering lever connects to it... That is the section that is either splined or square...

Here's what the 2 different pins look like. #17 is square-spline, #19 is square-square.

And the 2 different steering arms...

OK...if this is what you are calling the bellhousing then we aren't talking about the same piece. The piece I was talking to that guy about was the piece that this AND the gimbal ring sit in. The piece that that big square-splined bolt connect the gimbal to. It the piece that actually bolts to and touches the rear of the boat.
