Re: New Boater with questions.

I have big problem.
my flush muffs doesn't fix onto the motor. as you can see in the picture. the vent is on the propeller unit. I can't get the flush muffs to open wide enough to "hook" it on. I am using the regular flush muffs, it come with the boat, can't figure out how to put in on. Please help.

P/S: does the regular car battery work for the trolling motor? I just need to test it in the water for like 10 min. Thanks

yeah that you don't want to do! the vents are in front of that on the lower unit, the open parts that have a thick screen like covering on top of them. The end with the hose attachment should face towards the front of the boat.

Yeah, your regular car battery will work fine for test. It is not good to use car battery there all the time because they are made to produce lots of power for a few seconds (starting the car), and they are not working hard the rest of the time.
Deep cycle batteries are made to give out power constantly.

Re: New Boater with questions.

Fill and went screws:

Here is how you change that oil:

1. Find some container to empty the old oil into
2. lower the motor all the way
3. unscrew the "fill" screw (take it out but don't lose it)
4. oil should not be coming out at this point (maybe a little bit)
5. loosen the "went" screw.
6. oil will start to leak out the "fill" screw.
7. take the "went" screw out completely (don't lose it)
8. after all of the oil is out, you need to fill it back from the "fill" hole
9. you will need a special pump (cheap, a few bucks, marine store or Walmart)
in order to do that
10. pump will have a threaded end that you can thread in "fill" screw place.
11. pump until the oil starts coming out of the "went" hole
12. screw back the "went" screw
13. take the pump out and put the "fill" screw back
14. HURRY UP MAN, THE WINTER IS AROUND THE CORNER :)
15. I hope this was detailed enough. Enjoy!

Hi, I follow your instruction. but when i open both vent and fill hole. jusr a little oil came out.... I am thinking since these two holes are on the same lever. the oil will never flow out. Do i need to have something to suck it out?

Are you sure you don't have another drain down lower on the gearcase?

Wow. looks like another one of Force's eccentricities. Post over in the Force forum to see what they say.

Wow!
Was this a spontaneous, impulse purchase?
Your questions border on the frightening.

Edit to add: Yes, keep the questions coming. It's better to ask than to have drama in your first boating experience.

Hey Birdgod, keep the questions coming. There is nothing worse than a boater that knows nothing but thinks they know everything or are afraid to ask. Keep trolling these forums and asking your questions, no matter how simple they seem, and you will be in the top percetile of boaters before long, believe me.

I will give a you a tip. Bring your boat to the Wal-mart (or similar) parking lot when it is not crowded and practice backing up and manuvering your trailer, have your wife/girlfriend do it too. There is no better way to ruin boating for yourself and your loved one than a bad ramp experience. And there is nothing more valueable than a wife that can back you in and park the trailer. Put some orange cones out and practice, practice, practice and use the mirrors. It's not that hard and once you've got it, you've got it.

Oh, and NEVER yell at your loved one unless you want to go boating by yourself and have to beg to do even that. That's what I have heard anyway, not from personal experience. :D

Best thing to do is check your owner's manual and see what the towing capacity is for your truck. If it's 3500 lbs you should be OK. You can put a hitch on yourself quite easily with a helper. I ordered a Class 3 hitch from JC whitney and put it on myself in an hour. A helper will cut your installation time way down. You're lifting a steel bar. Take a wrench/socket set, a vise-grip and a round file in case you need a little help lining up the mounting holes.
I had to open the hole up a little to get the bolt to go through. They suggest torque-ing the bolts when your done so borrow a torque wrench if you don't have one. Good Luck.

Re: New Boater with questions.

If it's an 80's boat (which is what it looks like) there is a sticker next to the gas filler neck that states what gas/oil mix to use. 50:1 is 2.6 ounces of 2-cycle oil per gallon. So 10 gals - 26 ounces of oil. Some people like to run it a little leaner on the oil. I've run 2 oz per gal and never had a problem. The carbs like it better, IMO. The sticker may also say USE LEADED GAS so you'll have to buy lead substitute. You can get it a Walmart. Most 2 cycle oil has fuel stabilizer in it so you dont need to add it to the gas when winterizing. Check the label on your oil to be sure. When all else fails, read the owner's manual, if you have it. Good Luck.

The iboats forum's policy is that we run what the manufacturer recommends for fuel oil mix. Period. Running these engines lean on oil is just silly and asking for trouble. No lead substitute needed. These engines were designed to be run on unleaded 87 octane gasoline.

I have an 87. It says USE LEADED GAS on the sticker. I suggest all readers look at the sticker next to the gas filler neck and/or the owner's manual if they have it.

Re: New Boater with questions.

Lead in a 2 cycle engine has absolutely no effect. You're wasting your money. Leaded gas was *gone* from 99% of all gas stations by 1986.

I used a hydraulic floor jack as my helper. Worked quite nicely. Bought my class 3 receiver at Auto Zone for about $120 + $40 for the 2" ball/hitch & installed it in under an hour on my 03 Nissan Frontier 4x4 - no drilling/cutting (it's a Reese).

Re: New Boater with questions.

have you ever (perhaps with the prior owner) started the motor? Just want to warn you that an older outboard will not start like your toyota - you need to make sure you have fuel pressure - probably a bulb you squeeze from the gas can, but maybe an electric 'in-tank' pump. Once you have adequate fuel pressure to the motor, you must set the gear shift/throttle to the throttle only-neutral position and give maximum throttle. Hit the choke button and crank.

If properly tuned and setup, your force motor will start very quickly - the fuel/ignition system is very simple. If you start cranking a lot, something is not set up correctly.

Actually, if I didn't have a problem with one of the holes lining up it might have been a 20 min. job. I was out of town (on vacation, I brought the hitch with me). Luckily, a guy next door had the motherlode of tools. He loaned me the round file and voila, the bolts were in. A little torquing and I was done.
