replacing the carpet on the boat and the decking is in really good condition with the exception of a couple spots the top layer is just starting to lift a lil bit hard to explain but they are like wider splinters floor is still strong and no flex in thease areas.first should i use glue? or no glue and stainless steel staple the edge and put down the metal angle?also was wondering if i should coat the wood with some thing? like a deck sealer? epoxy like west system kinda $$$$ or would a coating of fiberglass reisen help to protect it? the deck i think was replaced around 2003 at least that was spray painted under the boat. cost is the biggest factor right now.i feel the deck will last a few more years as is but would like to extend the life as much as possible. my thoughts are to keep the water from getting on and soaking into the wood. i am only able to put some cheap indoor outdoor carpet down for now $40.00 and my time is all thats invested oh and 20 bucks for railng spacers.

I did my deck last year. I used paint and painted the whole thing. Epoxy would have been better but it was a lot more expensive. I went to the paint store and got a mis colored good quality exterior paint for $10 a gallon. They all have mis tinted paint there if you don't care what color it was and I certainly didn't care. After that I just stapled the new carpet down.

Just redecked and carpeted mine last week. I used carpet adhesive along the edges, pulled the carpet over the edges and back under and stapled underneath. Do one side first then stretch it as tight as you can and staple the crap out of it underneath. An air stapler works wonders for this. The railings will help hold it down as well.

Ya you probably should use glue, the outdoor stuff at Lowes/Menards works fine, use a trowel with a cerated edge and put it on kinda thick, shouldn't have to do the entire deck but at least get a good bit of it.

I saw a guy yesterday laying carpet on a toon in his yard and he was using a yard roller to flatten the carpet, pretty good idea I thought, just like we do it at work only we have a purpose built roller.

well here are my thoughts one the paint sounds like a way to keep water from soaking in,like for the last two days rain so the woods wet cant be good .if i coated the whole deck with the glue will tha keep the water from soaking in the wood? the carpet that came off was still all wrinkled and wasnt much glue left anywhere but there where signs of glue.if i put it on heavy what will that due if the deck last long enough for new carpet again?
the carpet that i am putting down doesnt look like it has much of a backing that will disinagrate like the old that was on it. ohh what to do?

Re: new carpet? glue or no glue?

I have just finished a total rebuild of my pontoon boat. Tore it down to the tubes and started over...I covered the 3/4 inch marine ply wood with a 2 part epoxy paint and then glued the carpet down with the carpet manufacturers recommended glue...VERY MESSY..If I had it to do over I would
not use glue. The glue did not hold well (YES I FOLLOWED THE DIRECTIONS)and I had a million wrinkles. I ended up using stainless staples down one side and stretching the carpet to the other side and using staples there also. On my boat the trim and the railing holds the carpet great.
I guess if you ask a 100 people you will get 100 answers..Just thought I would add my experience to the mix..Good Luck.

KEEP IT FUN..KEEP IT SAFE!

Has anyone tried Deckadence flooring for boats instead of carpet? Wondering if it is better.
