Hey everyone, I'm new to the boating lifestyle. Picked up an 88 bayliner capri cuddy cabin last summer for 500 bucks. My wife and i are very excited to restore this boat. Was sitting on some property that my wife and I had purchased. We were told it ran when it was parked but that was well over 5 years ago. I sucked out the fuel, put some fresh new gas in, changed the gear oil, cleaned carbs, and charged the battery. She started right up with a little choke. So we brought it to the lake and ran her all day with no issues whatsoever. Hours of smiles for us and the children.
Anyways, this is now why im in the resto section. The floor is soft around the floor storage. And after poking around on this site for a few minutes I realized that I'll probably for sure have to put in new stringers as well and possibly transom. But im still kinda unsure what the actual transom is. I know it's the back of the boat but is there a wood beam there or what?

This is the transom. The wood and fiberglass on back of boat. Wood being what usually needs replaced.

Welcome! I'm right there with you. I bought my project never having done anything like before but always wanted to learn so I'm a testament that if I can do it anyone can... although I'm far from done so it might be a little early to say that.

Second of all, there are really no stupid question...unless you ask the same question over and over and over....

Post some pictures for everyone to see what your are talking about and have plans to refurbish. Remember this is the best boat site for such things. And while it could get iffy when you see exactly what needs repaired, it really is doable. So many have started out exactly like you and accomplished their boat project and are happy boaters now.

So ask your questions and understand we all had to learn and understand the terminology like you are going to. And to coin that same phrase, If I can do it, anybody can...

Posting a bunch of pictures can help with responses. If you have any sort of photo editor on your computer, then you can re-size pictures to about 800 x 600 pixels and they will be of the proper size to post.

Don't automatically assume that you boat will need stringers and transom, but with a Bayliner of that age, it is a pretty safe bet. Although the hull of your boat is fiberglass, the 'bones' of the boat are made of wood, particularly with that vintage of boat. The wood often absorbs water and rots after about 15-20 years.

ok, I think I got the pic situation figured out now. These are pics from first time on the water and the boats shape

This is how its sitting right now. the only soft spot is a couple inches off the floor storage on the sides. everything else seems solid.
Goals:
get flooring up to par
Remove original seat boxes/ and build new full around seating with under seat storage and a new captains chair.
Reupholster in lime green and bright blue
dip dash and steering wheel and various other interior/exterior parts
tint windows
new stereo
install my bimini top
finish removing pinstripe from outside
paint the blue stripe on the outside of boat to lime green with a heavy flake, then blue pinstriping on edges of green
paint trailer same lime green as on boat
New Parts needed:
Both front cuddy windows are cracked
trim on the back of the boat around motor
one of the front plastic vents leading into the boat windows is cracked
plastic pillar in between windows by the drivers seat

I'm sure I'll be needing other newer parts also but as of now that's what's on my mind for the boat. I have the seats which will need new upholster, and I have the lower parts for the storage that run along the bottom of the seats that'll be up for sale or trade also.

Sounds very doable. I take it you love lime green... Only issue you may have it the flake part. Unless you know how to spray such flake, that could present a problem...that is unless you are applying some decal flake. IDK

Yes my wife and I love lime green lol. Thankfully im a custom painter(about 8 years now) / and do hydrographic's and vinyl to. My wife and i have our own business alongside with me working for bnsf also. I will definitely be keeping everyone updated with pics. I'm excited for this project boat and to see how she turns out. The boat should be painted in about a month

Hi there and welcome aboard. Many on here have replaced stri gets and transom and I am no exception. You'll find tons of useful information on the subject and you may wish to look in on my thread "Water getting in" which is documenting this very process. It's a first for me so it may well contain avoidable mistakes. Best of luck and happy was with your new baby .

Did you drill holes into the stringers and transom (from inside the boat) to core sample the wood? If not, you really ought to, given how much you're removed already. If the wood is good (dry and light colored), just fill the holes with 3M 5200 marine sealant and you're good to go. If the samples are wet and/or dark, at least you know what you need to do, and you'll know you have a safe boat when it's all done.

I have not made it to the stringers yet Jas. I need to rip out the seat boxes and floor and then check them out. As for the transom, I'm still a bit confused because it seems to me there is only a chunk of wood in between the two rear seat boxes (which are also wood) but is not directly on the back of the boat???? am I missing something lol. I am hoping to get back into ripping into the Franzia on Thursday as I have classes away from home for the next couple days.
