I learned on The Simpsons that trucks have had full autopilot for years but that you truckers have been hiding it from us to keep your jobs :)

Good luck Gary!

Re: New job jitters!

All i can say is WHEW!! What a day!

Not really bad at all but i'm not used to busting my hump that hard!
Started out at about 5:30 am and had the truck empty by 12:30 ( 10 stops )
Got back to the terminal and they had another load ready.
Another 10 stops:eek:

I bumped my last dock at 5:55 pm.The placed closed at 6 so that was close!

Got back to the terminal and the boss said that i was as fast as any other drivers he has.
He offered all the runs i want.
Being i was just contracted to them for the day and got the job done that was a good feeling that he was making offers that fast.I guess they go through a lot of drivers by pushing that hard every day.

Really not sure if i could handle that on a daily basis.I am dragging butt tonight.
So i hope my next assignment is a line haul or drop and hook..

As far as the driving part goes....No problem! Just like i never missed a day..actually that 10 speed felt very familiar...:D

This may be kinda fun getting to check out a bunch of different companies with no commitment.

Thanks again for all the well wishes guys! and Mrs. LadyFish..!

I am very curious about the truck's spec. I used to spec them out a lot, but some things have changed and I am about to get back into it. Year? Make? Engine? 10 speed Roadranger? Rockwell? Tire size? Rear end ratio? Sorry, just wondering what the specs are like. Somethings haven't changed and some things have gone crazy . . .

Down at the hotel bar having adult beverages? Have a good trip Ken..:D

Just back from dinner after stopping at the bar for an hour or so. Heading back to the bar to sample some more beverages before turning in for the night in a few minutes. Going to call Mrs Ken first though. I have an early start in the morning. Couple of days here and next week most likely off to our facility in Alabama. Hope it's warmer down there !!!!
Glad all went well for you today. Time for you to relax with an adult beverage or two now.

The one i drove yesterday was a 2006 International.
I know it had the usual 22.5 tires, the tranny was an Eaton-Fuller i believe.
Not sure what rear end gear or engine. They had it fueled,pre-trip inspected and running and all i had to do was jump in and drive.
I know it had no power....probably the fuel squeezing International engine.
Topped out at a whopping 64 mph....lol!

I know the dash panels have changed a ton...Much more modern than the old gauges from the trucks in the 90's

Ha, I was going to mention that but I didn't know how many Simpsons fans there are on this board who'd appreciate it :D

They're my new favorite truck OEM. Stay tuned . . . ;)

It was probably a Cummins ISM 11 liter 370ish HP. International's 11 and 13 liter engines (MaxxForce) didn't come out until 2007. The 64 MPH was probably electronically limited. What RPM at 64? Gear fast, run slow . . .

Yea it was turned down by the computer...just like it shut off when it hit 64mph..I think it was turning about 1900 to 2000 rpm at 64mph.
Tall gears but no power?

I am used to the older trucks. The one a drove years ago with a series 60 Detroit would top out at 112 mph..That was my West Coast runner back then.

Actually 1900 seems really fast for good cruise fuel economy. I thought the 10 speeds had pretty tall OD, something like .73 but you can get a direct 10 as well, so who knows. I would call that a short legged spec if it was spinning that fast. Could've been an ISL 9 liter even, and that would make more sense with your power complaint and the RPM. What RPM could you get to going through the gears?

Old work story of mine . . . I was working with one of our (CAT) first electronic engine customers back in the late 80s. We were setting up the electronic parameters for speed limits and gear RPM limits etc. So I said "well Jack, you just need to tell me what you want me to plug into the computer as a speed limit". And he says "well, I want better fuel economy, and I am dead serious about this, and I know I need to slow these guys down, how about 95?" :D

Re: New job jitters!

Maybe your next truck will have the Eaton Autoshift trans, you just pull the lever to D and go, the engine and trans computers talk to each other and shift the manual gear box for you.
