Re: New job jitters!

dang, i love pork.

LMAO!!!!

QC...I really didn't watch the tach much while shifting.I'm so used to going by ear.For the most part probably up shifting at about 1700 to 1900.
Some of those older trucks would turn 2300 or so at 100+ mph.
I had that truck with the Detroit series 60 cranked way up at the dealer.
Man,They charged about 600 bucks just to plug in and set the computer up.

I have driven a couple automatics before and hated them...it takes all the fun out of it.

I don't like Autos either, especially anything with a torque converter. Have you driven an Eaton Autoshift though? It's really a manual with auto shifting. First ones had a clutch pedal just for starting, then electronics and motors took care of the rest. Now, no clutch, but it is still a manual box that is automated . . .

Lots of luck on the new job Gary does it feel weird driving again, or like you never left? The last tractor trailer I drove was a portable parking lot back in 97

Wow things have changed since I was trucking, last I remember there were only Allison automatics and they were junk usually backed up by a Detroit 60 series. I learned to drive on a quad box  I had a few trucks my 1st I owned was a 71 CO Kenworth with a 425 1693 cat + a RR 13, that engine was indestructible till the shutters for the radiator got stuck and the guy driving for me failed to notice toasted a head and blew a piston . After that was a slew of Macks, Peter Cars even a Freightshaker bit I won't bore you with that Just thought you would appreciate the 1693 I had heard cat stopped making them cause they were to dependable

Yeah, I can still spit out all of the overhaul part #s for a 1693. Common rumor about them, but they were replaced due to weight, cost and fuel economy. Double overhead cams made it more of a hot rod as compared to the replacement 3406 which was also a fine engine. Now it is a C15 and CAT has bascically left the truck business although they are building C15 long blocks for Navistar's soon to be announced 15 liter . . . The '93s were rated 425 and 1450 lb/ft torque. C15 is the same bore and stroke and is now 625 bhp and 2050 lb/ft. Shows what electronics and 40 years will get you. Marine they are rated to 853 bhp

QC-
can you think of a couple of reasons the 3208 turbo reman engine (less than 50.000 miles) pumps out the black smoke on hard exceleration.
we turned up the fuel preasure because it was not giving enough turbo boost and it got worse.
I Know its overfueling, but what could it be, stuck injectors or possibly the advance is stuck?

Re: New job jitters!

Timing advance failure is usually white smoke . . . Could be worn injectors (nozzles) which actually increase fuel rates. How did you turn up fuel pressure? These engines are not fuel pressure sensitive. As long as there is enough supply, fuel pressure doesn't mean a whole lot with the sleeve meter fuel system (3208). Sounds like you "turned it up" as in more delivery rate, but not pressure per se . . .

Why did you say "not enough boost"? black smoke can be clogged intake or a bad turbo or a leaking aftercooler or anything that would restrict or leak off boost. But if boost drops with no change to the fuel system then it is not the fuel system . . . ;) As in, yes boost will go up when fuel rates increase, but the problem was/is black smoke and low boost (hand in hand), not low fuel rates . . . Make sense?

Edit: truck engine? Maybe air cleaner or exhaust restriction.

Edit 2: Should probably start a new thread in Non-Boating tech . . .

Alot of newer rigs, you can't really hear the revs. I do have bad hearing, and with modernization comes quiet, smoother and alot of vibe isolation. You can still "feel" it through the stick if you hang on it.

What ever happened to the old school Macks and Autocars...lol

oink! oink!

I just spit my Pepsi out!...Dang it Art!...:D

Hey TD! Maybe i could start a Itrucks forum...lol!
QC can be my engine tech guy...;)

To the other question about the newer automatics...Nope,never have had to drive one.
I used to love those big yellow engines though. And when they are turned up they will roll the black smoke.
The ones i have driven that are turned up all smoked but would fly.About 3 mpg though...
Usually if the turbo is leaking oil it is more of a white smoke.

Ken,The first load of pork i take to Florida TD will get it.
Wonder if he likes them still squeeling or packaged and ready for the BBQ pit?
I think letting a live one loose in his back yard and make him work for it..:p

Just was called from dispatch. Back in that same International for Thursday and Friday.
Maybe next week i'll get a different one to drive.

I miss my 96 Freightliner Classic XL i used to drive.Got it brand new and drove it for 3 years.
My least favorite is VOLVO! I had a brand new 670 and hated it.No leg room and all plastic.

Remember the Marmon? Big old boxy trucks but they were a beast!

My very first truck was a one stack Mack with the window in the back..
Then the old International Transtar. No air ride back in those days.

Re: New job jitters!

You can bring a live one down here - we're 30 miles northeast of B'ham, AL. We'll make you some fine bbq to take on the rest of the trip. I have three little and one big dog that will make quick work out of any pigs on the scene.

Glad you're enjoying the ride. The newer technology is cool - watch the gauge on the dash that says rpmsx something for revs - it's a good thing. I'm hard of hearing to a point that it's a pain on my family. I can't tell you how many times I've forgotten to shift the Honda or the BMW up into top gear and then bumped the rev limiter while trying to overtake someone on the freeway.

Yes,That is a blessing.I am glad for i386 too :D

Other than my boat repair work i was out a real job for 11 months!
The longest i have ever had that happen.Usually i always had a job to go to before leaving one.

Now i get 3 voice mails since yesterday for boat winterizing.
Man,It has been in the 20's here for several nights already and colder this weekend.

Would you think they waited just a bit too long?

Oh,The mail run was super easy. Hit the post office docks, pull a couple skids off and go to the next one.All if it was Christmas packages!:D
And NO...i did not look in any of them!
