Ok Board, its me again,
Bondo, Don S. I need the pros to chime in cuz im stumped at the moment
Ok Here is the short list
New long Block............ I havent checked the numbers on the block yet but I believe it to be a 1977 or so................Chevy 350/Merc260 with about 1 hour of run time on it, Using 5 /30 wieght oil for the break in (still sitting on the stand)Checked compression>>>>120 on all 8 cylinders
same intake same carb.
same manifolds I inspected them but did not pressure test them, they looked very good IMO
same risers
Checked starter>>>>>>>>checked good reinstalled
checked alt>>>>>>>checked good reinstalled
New water pump
all new gaskets
New Bosch Platnum spark plugs
Same Marine stainless plug wires
New cap and rotor
Same distributer
I did all the work to assemble myself and with the help of Iboats(Thank you Thank You Thank You ) I couldnt have done it without this website:D NOW Here is the issue
The engine runs incredible, Fires instantly runs very well so far but when I looked under the oil fill cap I saw a bunch of WHITE oil/grease looking stuff on the cap, after doing dialing in the timing Is this normal ? am i over reacting?
Or is it milk shake??? could it be the risers? or more likley the manifolds?
I dont think its the head gaskets cuz all are testing even all the way around

If the oil itself is clean what you are seeing is condensation which rises to highest point and collects as engine is heating up. I wouldn't worry unless there is water in the oil pan. Wipe it out and see how fast it builds up again after a few heat cycles.

Cool thats what I was hoping someone would say;) This is my 1st engine build on a 350 small block. I just dont want to put the new motor in my boat just to take it back out again:mad:
That would not be fun.
Like I said its only been running for an hour or so, I checked the oil and its super clean............. like it should be.
I would imagine the only thing it could be is a blown head gasket, or the exhaust mani's leaking back into the exhaust ports right?
Or Heaven forbid a cracked block or head:eek::eek::eek::eek:

double check your oil and the level of it. no change here, then its very unlikely that water is getting into your oil. did u check the cover and ensure that it was clean before you started up. if no discoloration of the oil and no rise in level I would clean the cap and run the engine again checking for any build up forming again.
Also do u have an oil cooler hooked up to your engine. if so then pressure test that also. i have seen a guy take apart a good engine for a bad oil cooler.

No Fuss :)

yes I checked and cleaned the inside of the valve covers Before installation, the engine oil looks clean and good so far Remember ive only run it for an hour its a fresh rebuild, but I think will mark the dip stik and see if there is a rise in the oil level...............................................

you should be using a heavier weight oil like a 20w40 and not 5w30 that is way to light for a marine engine you will end up rebuilding again soon

personally, I would consider springing for new manifolds... or at the very least pressure test them. would really suck to lose a new engine that you've obviously done a good job with over that "minor" detail.

Ayuh,... An hour is plenty of time to milk up the fillcap with condensation, just putzin' around....

Run it fairly Hard for an hour or 2, Then check the fillcap, it'll probably be Clean....

Just keep an eye on the oil Level while breakin' in...
If it Rises, head for the shop...

Thanks Bondo, spoke with a freind of mine today as well he says the same thing probably just condensation. I let him know i did a copmression test last night>>>>:D 120psi on all 8:D
I will look into the replacement of the mani's, but it looks like for my application they are going to run 3-400 each.........OWCH:eek:
So I will proceed with the install and keep a close eye on my oil level as well as Milk shake:D

What did you use for gaskets on your manifold/riser connection? Hopefully, genuine mercruiser gaskets. Were the mating surfaces clean and straight?

yes i cleaned the matting surfaces with a wire wheel then used used original gaskets from mercruiser with the two blocking plates installed and Ultra Black gasket Maker sandwiched between, then ran my finger all the way around the riser/mani connection to insure proper seal after tightening down the nuts then allowed to dry overnight.
Is there something i maybe missing? I Dont "think" there would be a leak there but anything is possible .........please advise

Ultra Black gasket Maker sandwiched between,
Well...you ARE supposed to put those on dry but not sure if that's your problem here.

Have the manifolds ever had a chance of getting frozen with water in them?

Re: New long block, Water still getting in the oil

Not to my knowledge no, I started the engine up again today. it looks to me like water iS getting in to the oil somehow. the only thing i can think of is the manifolds. Theres gotta be a hole in one or both. Because ive got white sh$# on both caps.
i will try the acetone 1st, then try the pressure test 2nd.
is there a proceedure for pressure testing the manifolds??

Re: New long block, Water still getting in the oil

im going to pull the manifolds within the day or two and try the acetone trick.
I will let you know how it goes:confused:
