Re: New Oil Warning Module issues

Got off work early had some time to kill so I pulled the oil pump off took out the cap that holds the magnet and then pulled the shaft out.

The first thing, my shaft is not plastic, its harden steel. it looks good will post a picture.
The cap that sits on the shaft should hold the magnet Right? at least that's what the diagram shows.

On mine there is nothing that can fall out maybe its made into it. There is a black dot on it.
should I line it up with the sensors.

If all of this fails, what can I do, besides pull it off.

as u can see the magnet is working, shaft looks good top of the cap is not stripped. Pump looks good.

ok now I understand its in the motor, well then that means if its bad I have to pull a head and tear the motor down. Right...

Re: New Oil Warning Module issues

This thread has been an interesting one to read. The thread has been focusing on repair of the alarm system of this Mercury motor. Now on its second page, it appears that the root cause of the alarm is an actual alarm condition, not a problem with the alarm system.

Problems with the plastic gear in the oil pump drive of Mercury motors are well-known. My local Mercury mechanic says he has never repaired the plastic gear problem--it is too expensive and no customers would pay for it. Most owners of Mercury motors with a stripped plastic drive gear for the oil pump usually abandon the oil mixing system and convert to using fuel with oil and gasoline pre-mixed.

Because of the high cost of repair of a failure of the plastic drive gear in the Mercury oil injection system, an alternative after-market solution has been developed. It replaces the OEM oil mixing pump with an electrically operated pump. The cost of a gear replacement is estimated at $1,200. The cost of retrofitting an electrically operated pump is estimated at $575.

For more information on this solution, see:

Marine Solutions (Wisconsin)
http://www.marinesolutionswi.com/

They have retrofit kits available for Mercury V6 outboards:

--135 to 200-HP, 1989 through 1999

--200 to 225-HP, 1995 through 2001 3-liter

The manufacturer of this retrofit comes with some credentials. Robert Kachelek, president of Marine Solutions, was formerly the director of Outboard Service for Mercury Marine.

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:<<<<<<<< jhebert

Got light down in there it looks good to me, took a really long Q-tip rub it in there no shards or chips on it. So I put the shaft and cap back in but not the pump, held it in with my finger to see if it turned spun the motor, It did strong and sure no free play no moving up in down if it was missing the drive gear somewhere. It got cold and we have a snow storm blowing in today and tonight.

So i'll do more research and get back to it in a day or 2.

... if you had pump and bushing out the magnet is upside doen in bushing.

i'd try replacing/reversing the magnet for sure before buying anything. it doesn't cost anything.

And BTW, you won't find any part number to replace your old worn wires. They always came attached with the sensors or whatever. Buy a lenght of marine grade tinned wire and some heat shrink tubing.

Re: New Oil Warning Module issues

Hey I talked to a friend of mine dad who is a retired US Navy Mechanic, he serviced the search and rescue division. worked on many outboards. he gave me this long to do list and I had to video it. Well he got back to be me today and told me to replace the internal wiring harness. From what he see's I have a major problem with it. Alot of jumping and splicing is sending a lot of weak voltage to areas that needs alot more, and some back charging. I have some positive grounds, instead of negative. Instead of making an even bigger jungle just get a new harness and put it in right. should not be no splicing, there is a wire for everything and everything has a wire. If it dont solve my problem, would've fixed alot of the other ones I dont know about yet. Whoever rebuilt this thing did a very sloppy job or its just been jerry rigged on top of jerry rig he said.

He also told me without cracking the head there is no real way of knowing if the gear was replaced in the rebuild and if its bad now. he said if it was him to do the rebuild he would've, but alot of ur mom and pops fix it men wont or over look it. He did recommend a retro fit just because of the year 1988, it would be 1/3 of the cost (someone else) or the time if you did it ur self. Its JUST out dated technology not worth the head ache when there is a better way and a fair cost. I could still use that $225 modual I just got.

So I have a lot to chew on while I'm snowed in. THANKS FOR ALL OF YOU GUYS HELP AND GUIDANCE.

Put it all back together and move the green wire from module on pack to different cylinder and retest.
