I started this thread to get a little help with patching up a old boat in hopes of getting a couple of year out of her. I can only speak for myself and say that if and when I ever did decide to sell the boat I would totally disclose the condition of the boat to the new owner. I would never hold anything back that could put the operator and or there family in danger. Plus I just dont like to be ripped off so I dont do it to others. Right now I have no intentions of selling the boat. With that said lets get back to this patch job. I worked on the front deck some today, scapped off as much of the old paint as I could and gave it a good sanding with 60 grit and then with some 80. Sprayed a little primer on it to protect it while I finish. It did not come out too bad.

You got a super deal on this boat, and I would do the same thing. Got any pics of the sanding? I do like how you laid down the floor, good craftsmanship. Decided on a paint yet? Colors?

If you're looking for all-purpose cheap and durable fixes, consider outdoor carpet. I've seen it used before and it goes in easy, requires little maintenance (a Shop Vac), and best of all it's cheap. My dad has it on his 17' with a similar setup, and it is great. Just a thought.

I have thought about putting the carpet down. My only issue I am afraid that it will ack like a sponge and hold alot of water on the floor. I am trying to keep as much standing water of the floor as possible to make the patch job last as long as possible. I might just paint it and put some anti skid in the paint for the floor. I will get some more pictures up tonight of the progress

I have been doing alot of gringing and sanding and have put down some white primer. Still have a ways to go but starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel. Her are some more pictures of the progress.

I would use indoor outdoor carpet(I did) since you got a sealed surface,looks nice by the way

Not sure what motor yet. It had a 90 Johnson seahorse on it before but the person that gave me the boat kept it. I would like to put at least a 75 on it. Have been trying to find a decent used one but have not came across one at a price I could afford yet. Saving my pennys for one now and hoping someone want to get rid of one towards the end of boating season. I have been thinking about putting down carpet but have not decided on that yet. The floor work is a patch job and even though its sealed I am a little scared of putting down a big sponge.

Put a want add out. Do you have a local used site? Craigslist maybe. I put a want add a few week ago, and had a response with a few days. And found a like new Johnson 115hp, for a very good price.

You could lay down carpet that has rubber on the bottom side. That doesn't hold down water and you can wash it. That's what I have on my 16 footer. It has been in salt water and nothing has happened to it or the deck.

Finished the patch job on the floor and did the painting today. Did not come out to bad. Next is to tackle the electrical. Its getting there.

I used Rustoleum oil based enamel (gloss white). I did some reading on it and found out a lot of people had good results with it. Did alot of prep work to it First I put 2 coats on it and also added some anti skid to the paint. Seems to stick good. This whole progect is being done on a budget. Paint cost me $25.00 for the gallon. Only used half of it so I have some left over for touch ups. I rolled it on with a 6 inch foam roller.

You got it for 25 bucks! I went to HD and it was $36. I looked into that paint as well, but now i'm convinced I'm getting it.

I have been working on the electrical some and have been shopping around for a motor. It had a 90 HP seahorse on it before I got it. What would be the smallest you think would get this boat on plane and push it. I am not to worried about speed but would like to get 30-35 mph out of her. Its a 17 foot flats boat (see pictures) made by a company called west boat manufacture (no loner in business). There is not a max hp or max weight plate on the boat. Any thoughts

I wouldnt add carpet to that boat...sponge like ya said....and that paint will be SLICK when wet ........so some silica sand or soming added to the last coat is a great idea...you wont regret that grip in the surface.

when you do sell do the new buyer a favor and let em know it wasn't completely rotted, but had a few softies, and ya covered over it...at least they will know what they're getting into....I know Id appreciate that as a buyer!

maybye you can score an old boat with a decent motor and then you're set!
the NO TITLE just sales receipt etc
no title boats are a great for scoring cheap outboards....they go for less than the outboard by itself!
