Re: Is there a way to know if my stringers are still attached? I hear a slapping nois

take a sponge......and stuff it into each end of the pvc holes.....like a sound barrier. and see if it still flaps as loud as it did before.

the boat has a self bailing beck and there is no bilge....that means foam....solid foam under the deck....kinda like the way the whalers are built.....im betting its a steering cable

I'll give that a shot. I tried to eyeball the steering cable as it was making the noise and I didn't see it moving. It sounds like it's coming from th port side, and all of the rigging is on the starboard.

The construction is as you said - self bailing deck, enclosed bilge. However, not knowing the construction, I can't say for sure if it is foam filled. It actually sounds hollow.

Thanks for the sponge idea. I'll see if it tells me anything.

if the boat was made professionally.....it must have foam according to the uscg. in a self bailing deck situation......with that design.....i would venture to say the hull is all foam. or at least should be

It was made by a small builder who has made a lot of boats here in Southeast TX...so I assume they follow the rules. Now, I don't know if the floor has ever been out and if the foam may have been removed.

It has a USCG tag...so I hope they followed the rules!

sean....you can allways do the inspection hatch cover thing....

take a big hole saw and cut the deck in an out of the way area.....remove the cut out......and if you see a empty hull........sue them....lol

?and you can see the interior of the hull and where the stringer is tabbed to the hull...that is not true.......the hull is filled with foam...so you wont be able to see anything.....? Quoted from Oops.

Please forgive this little hijack. I have been following your thread and when this conversation came up I need to ask the pros here. My boat is empty below the deck. When I was redoing the deck I found access holes with covers and when I removed the covers I could see all the way down to the stringers and bottom of boat fiberglass. (I could reach down to the bottom of the hull and touch it. Nothing but empty air in there). My boat is a little older than Shawn?s being a 1959.
Thank you guys and I am really sorry about the hijack.

ShawnQ - here is i did in 2009. My floor was weak in a couple spots. I tapped on the floor with a hammer as if i was looking for a stud in a wall. If you come across a area that the sound changes then you may have a bad/soft spot.
I have anew floor and a 1 stringer, motor mount supports replaced in my Glastron.

Good Luck

I really doubt that a stringer has come loose. Never heard of it myself. It would take the epoxy or whatever holding the stringer down, as well as all of the fiberglass coming loose to let that happen. I really don't see how it is possible. Sounds to me like something else is happening.

I have a hard time thinking it could happen also, especially with the deck/floor on top of it.

I am going to try to go out again tomorrow and see if I can investigate some more. I was going to take it out today, but it was just too windy. Tomorrow should be better.

Thanks for the info everyone. I appreciate it.

New Wiring, terminals, heat-shrink, loom, inline fuse, and Blue Sea fuse box purchased!

Here's my simple electric diagram for the few items I do have on the boat. It's pretty simple. A little tough to read due to being done in paint, but it will help me and any future owners follow the wires.

After I get this done - I need to figure out if one of my stringers is loose or not.
If so, I'll be pulling the floor and repairing it eventually.
If not, I'll start planning to add the rear deck/storage boxes/livewell!

Take care,
Shawn

montery......in 59 the use of foam was not mandatory.....however with the inspection covers in your boat.....im guessing that someone has rebuilt your boat.

Found another owner of the same make/model boat who has had his floor up. I'm trying to get some info from him regarding stringer location, foam, lamination/layup, etc.

Hopefully he remembers. He did say he has owned the boat since new and would buy another one tomorrow if they still made them. That's good to hear.

Re: New Project! 1998 Rockport Center Console Flats boat w/ 1999 70hp Nissan

Thanks Oops. I think (and hope) you are correct because I read here about the horrors of old boats and rotten transoms and stringers, etc. daily in boats as little as 10 years old. Mine is so much older and ?thank God? I do not have these problems (so far that I can find). My transom is like a rock. Fast Question. Why would the internals stringers/transom rebuilt and rest of boat so horrible? The guy I got it from got it from a guy who got it from a guy?etc. I could not find the real PO if I tried.
ShawnQ I am almost to the point where I am going to start wiring up my boat. Thank you for the diagram to go from. Is it possible to enlarge the photo and post, or could you email/PM me the file. I think I might be a little colorblind as I do not see it very well but I really need a diagram to follow and of course I will never find one from my manufacturer because I am not even sure who the manufacturer is!

Monterey,

I can send you a file - or if your system is pretty simple I can make you one real quick if you shoot me a list of what you're wiring.

shoot me a private message with your email address.

Re: New Project! 1998 Rockport Center Console Flats boat w/ 1999 70hp Nissan

i have ripped apart many of boat........the majority of the problems i see, are because someone screwed something to the boat and did not properly seal the hole....

a transducer....a speedometer pitot......smart tabs.......anything that goes thru the transom..... as for the stringers and foam......that is usually a hole thru the fibregalss, caused by the trailer or beaching.

on the flip side....i have seen some 50 year old boats that are in fantastic shape....just because the owner took basic precautions with the boat.

Re: New Project! 1998 Rockport Center Console Flats boat w/ 1999 70hp Nissan

Well guys,

I think I figured out my 'slapping' noise. I am 90% sure my stringers are fine, still attached like they should be. However, the plastic rub rail on the outside of the 'rolled edge' on my boat is loose in one section. When hitting chop, it was slapping against the hull. Somehow it sounded like it was under my feet, and I could feel it when it slapped. I secured it up, tested it, and no unusual slapping/tapping under my feet. Good news!

Now - first things first, re-wire! My supplies are ordered and will hopefully arrive this coming weekend or early next week.

After that, I am going to start building my livewell/dry storage in the stern.

Here's a few questions for that:
My boat is fiberglass, polyester resin, with interlux paint on the interior on top of old worn gel coat 'spatter' finish. I want to build and glass new compartments on the deck with wood, glass, and resin. Can I use polyester, or should i go with epoxy? My concern with epoxy is obviously the cost - and there is not really a reason to use the everlasting epoxy if the rest of the boat is polyester. Input?

If I want to put another layer of glass up the gunnels/sides of the boat, on the interior, what should I use? I Just want to stiffen it up a little. Not much, but a little.

Also, on the 'rolled edge', there are a few areas that are cracked due to 'dock crashing' from the previous owner. I would also like to add an additional layer of glass on the 'rolled edge' portion of the hull, to toughen it up. Any recommendations for what to use on this area? It's about 3" wide, with a 1.5" lip on the outboard edge. I want to make it stronger, but not too rigid. If it's too rigid, it will crack easier.

Lastly, I know the boat was not built with meranti or okoume...probably just an exterior grade or marine grade ply that is 'budget' minded. The manufacturer did say there was a 50yr guarantee for no rot on the boat, but not sure what they used. If I am adding decks/storage, should I still go for the high priced meranti or okoume, or will I be OK using a completely wrapped/covered exterior grade plywood?

Thanks in advance,
Shawn

ANy exterior grade ACX is fine.

Use poly. yes epoxy is stronger and doesn't smell... not enough for me to justify the cost especially because you're not making a new structural component...

Re: New Project! 1998 Rockport Center Console Flats boat w/ 1999 70hp Nissan

How do you decide which type of glass to use in each area?

I want to glass the new rear storage and casting decks. They don't need to look smooth as I plan to durabak it.

I also want to put an additional layer on the floor and up the interior gunnels/sides of the hull. What should I use here?

Lastly, on the top edge of the rolled gunnel where there is minor dock damage, what should I repair with?

Again, I'm not too worried about finish as th entire boat will be durabak coated on the interior (except the new livewell). So, a thicker glass won't bug me.

Thanks,
Shawn

Hey Shawn,
I'm just popping in on you to check up on the latest. I am very glad to hear that your stringers were not doing the Watusi under your feet and that it was a fairly easy fix.

Dave,

Thanks for checking in.

The electrical is about 80% done, and I should be able to finish it when I get off of duty Friday.

Once that is complete i'll start gathering supplies for th deck addition.

I'll post befoe/after of the electrical once its finished.

Take care,
SQ
