Re: New proud owner of a total basket case.

Best news I got today is that my local lumber store stocks marine grade 1/2" a/b grade plywood for 50 a sheet and that they have a closed cell foam that expands to 127 gallons for 14. Its made for ponds and pools and is guranteed. To be waterproof. Just waiting for a cpl people to call me back about shop vacs and I am gonna gut this thing.

Aparently is made for ponds and pools. Big tall can made by dow chemicals. Guy told me they use it a lot in waterfalls to prevent the stones from moving. EVER. It it lightweight and aparently he used it himself is a rebuild of an old boat. Did is similar to FRISCO where they layed the wood after treating it numerous times drilled holes and fed it in. Sealed the holes and fibered over it.

Sounds like Great Stuff Pond and Stone foam... but the contents of the can will be .127 gallons, that's point.127 gallons or just a little over an eighth of a gallon... better known as a pint.

The salesman might be talking about something else, but the description sounds like this stuff:
GREAT STUFF™ Pond & Stone Concrete and Masonry Sealer

Let us know if it is something else though, I'd be very interested in 127 gallons (expanded) of urethane foam for $14.

I know it was a much bigger can than that maybe twice as big. He claimed it had a really big expansion rate. Which unless I am mistaken would keep the weight down. It was closed cell and waterproof even under water. It was by DOW and the can was red but looked different than the one you showed.

Ok I just didn't like the look or the setup of the mixing etc of that 2 part foam. Was worth a look I guess.

The transom feels real solid so that's a major plus.

Once had a tri hull kind of like that. Thought the transom was good when it was first looked at. Thumping on it sounded very solid. Turned out the wood was mush. It sounded solid because the back panel was a 1/2" thick.

Well from the looks of the way its in there. I don't think its going to be overall that hard to remove in comparison to the deck and stringers. I guess if the boat will be apart that far I might as well do it too. So at least I know

Re: New proud owner of a total basket case.

Ok well I tore into the floor today and I got some good news and some questions too. Pics are in the process of loading and I will be adding them to the thread shortly. I appears that the worst of my rot was directly in the middle of the deck where there is no foam or anything. Basically only the fiberglass was holding it semi together I was able to tear it off with minimal effort. The areas where there are foam while still rotten are in a lot of places somewhat sound and will have to be cut out etc. The beam is 99% insect rotted out it appears I anticipated that but what I was surprised is that is appears to be a 1X10 board and not plywood as I understood it would be. There are no bulkheads in place I can see where there used to be something fiber glassed in but no remnants of anything unless the termites ate it. Most of my damages seem to be from insect damage and they apparently had a pretty decent buffet. The foam all looks good that I can see. So I am felling a little better about the prospects of the project.

You might want to consider "Core Sampling" The foam. If theres any waterlogging going on it won't be evident except at the bottom.

Re: New proud owner of a total basket case.

Im assuming that either the bulkheads were small cross sections that didn't go to the bottom of the hull. Or, there may not have been any in that middle section, considering there is a stringer that looks like it runs the entire length of the boat in the very center of the hull. It's probably just because of the way they designed these deck boats.....Theres a small section about 2 foot from that walled area (bilge) in the back that looks like it could have been a cross beam or something. There may also be side bulkheads under the sides of your deck that you haven't dug into yet. It looks like there are 3 stringers total. 2 on the sides, and the one in the middle. Anybody else? I know I've said this before, and you probably dont want to hear it...but you're going to have to remove the cap on this boat. for the floor area up front, and the transom

I know it would probably be easier but there's no way for me to get it off alone and there's no where to put it when I take it off. Plus I know that would have the city beating on my door for some kind of compliance violation.

Re: New proud owner of a total basket case.

I am in the midst of getting out of the Army and actually am not required to be at work much. I pretty much have time. Its extra hands and friends with knowledge I am lacking. I "believe" someone has replaced the transom before it look like with the battery box and feul tank removed I will have a decent amount of space. I am gonna try and get the console off today and the controls so I can get hot and heavy with a shop vac and that way I can see a little better what I am working with. I have few hundred a month a basically just drink away or spend on Harley stuff I can devote to material. So if anyone knows anyone in Central Texas who wants to barter labor let me know lol.

First off, Thank you for your service! May civilian life be kind to you...

I know it would probably be easier but there's no way for me to get it off alone and there's no where to put it when I take it off. Plus I know that would have the city beating on my door for some kind of compliance violation.

As far as getting it off alone, I would have to disagree...I yanked mine off in one afternoon, by myself, and that includes throwing together a rinky-dink pair of trusses to support it...

Now, as far as being compliant with city ordinances, there I can't help you, because I almost got hauled off to jail for polluting my neighborhood with fiberglass dust:facepalm:...not really, but someone did call the po-po on me, and they basically told me to cease and desist...
A picture of your work area may help us get you some ideas on how to set up a "shop"...:noidea:
