Since I'm suffering from ACF (Acute Cabin Fever) I've been thinking.....

I think I finally devised the PERFECT solution for Selectable loud exhaust!

I don't think we need to COMPLETELY eliminate loud exhaust, after all the only reason any of us ever mind it is if it intrude on our own recreation so the solution is to allow the UNLIMITED use of loud exhaust AND stereos as long as it doesn't interfere with any other use of the area... Much the same as the FCC licenses the transmitting on various frequencies as long as the device 1: doesn't cause interference with other uses and 2: must accept any interference from other devices.

SOOOO we take the job of sound enforcement away from law enforcement and only task them with equipment enforcement.... EVERY vessel with the ability to vent exhaust higher than 10" below the surface of the water must be equipped with EITHER a permanently installed muffler certified in that boat to limit WOT sound to below xx db OR a remotely activated cutout system triggered on a standard frequency.... Then the transmitters for these devices will be made available to the public with an effective range of 1 nautical mile for under $20....

It's the perfect solution.... IF as the loud crowd claims they really ARE in an area where they aren't bothering anyone they can make all the noise they want BUT as the crowd of 20 go fast boats thunder up the river at 11 am, 3 hours after Doctor Joe got to sleep his water front home after working the midnight shift in the E.R. their exhaust would automatically get whisper quiet and the 5000 watt stereo would mute to a much lower level for a couple miles as they pass his home (and his transmitter) so he can sleep and go save lives again the next night. OR if Grandpa Pete is out with his young grandchildren teaching them to fly fish, they'll hear the boats in the distance but they'll be spared the bulk of the noise as the party crowd passes the fishing boat on the way to party cove.

On the other hand if Grandpa takes the kids out on fireworks night to see the airshow, fireworks, and "race boats" he leaves his transmitter off and as long as everyone in the area is of like mind then let em rip!

Everybody with ideas like this needs to be required to make one trip to Lake Havasu. You must also standup and propose it in front of the masses. Let me know when you're going, because I wanna watch.

Re: New Silent CHOICE Exhaust system!

I'm sure there would be plenty of people who thought it was unreasonable BUT you might be surprised how many locals would come out of the woodwork to celebrate.....

Interestingly, If something like this ever really DID go into effect I might be one of many many people who would actually WANT to go to lake havasu but would avoid it now.....

But let's not be unfair. While we're at it lets make the cutout's reasonably priced and subsidize them with a small tax on alcohol sold within 1000 feet of the water.

I wouldn't mind paying say 5% more for my margaritas to help ease the financial burden on retrofitting boats.

Plus we're lifting noise laws nationwide.... I'm certain there are areas of waterway that currently enforce noise ordinances where most of the time it truly wouldn't bother a single person..... Now they can uncork and play there all they want as long as it isn't wednsday morning when Ms Jackson is going for an early swim at the beach.

I like that idea a lot. Lets extend it to firearms. If the noise is loud our remotes should be able to disable the firing pit too, right?
The sad thing is that I don't actually think it will get implemented but if you get it through at that Havasu meet I'll pay you and a guest back for that extra 5% on all your drinks. :)

Re: New Silent CHOICE Exhaust system!

I'd have no problem buying and using silencers to spare my neighbors but that dang high dollar tax stamp is a bit steep.....

We are ALSO Eliminating ALL tickets and fines.... You can't ever get in trouble for being loud... ONLY for not having the required equipment...

First offense, No penalty except a written warning, entry into a nationwide database and a FREE tow back to the dock or marina of your choice up to 10 miles and $1 per mile per foot OAL thereafter after.

Second offense Free tow with same stipulations as above with added immediate seizure of boat and gear on board which will be fitted with required sound control and safety equipment and sold at auction to further fund subsidies for the installation of the devices.

I SHOULD have made this a poll LOL

Re: New Silent CHOICE Exhaust system!

I thought about a noise cancellation device to silence the car next to me rattling my windows. You know - 10 gizillion watts of Boom-Boom-Boom. When one pulled up next to me, I would activate it and the Boomer, not hearing the noise would turn the volume to max. I planned on turning off my silencer machine and blow his ear drums and windows out. Pretty cool, huh? Then I thought, his ears and windows, my ears and windows along the others around us would be blown out too. The design is back on the shelf pending further development. Another one of my million dollar ideas shot down. :)

somehow I doubt his bazillion watt stereo would be on very often..... he'd have to drive out into the desert to get away from transmitters

Gee, that is about the worst proposal I have heard. Too hard and expensive to implement and impossible to enforce.

How about no open pipes within xxx yards of any residential areas? Pick your xxx distance.

How about just changing the rules to make the exhaust outlets face into the boat. If they want to hear it let them. I bet they wouldn't use it very long. If they did leave them on the Carbon Monoxide would take care of it.

Re: New Silent CHOICE Exhaust system!

Indiana Law: All vessel engines have a factory-installed muffler or exhaust water manifold for noise reduction or another effective muffling system. It is illegal to operate a motorboat equipped with a muffler cutout, bypass, or similar device.

I have mufflers on my cruiser and they are not as loud as straight exhaust, but still noisy. Keep them closed going into and out of the marina. Been on Patoka lake a few times and there are some loud boats out there, don't know if they have muffs or not. Never heard of anyone getting a ticket for it, will check with in laws.

Here is what I found about IN
http://www.usps.org/e_stuff/documents/in_boating_safety_requirements.pdf

8. Muffling Devices
A person may not operate a motorboat on Indiana waters unless the boat motor is
equipped with:
1. A muffler;
2. An underwater exhaust; or
3. Other device that muffles or suppresses the sound of the exhaust to prevent
excessive and unusual noise at all speeds.

Re: New Silent CHOICE Exhaust system!

There are noise rules on Havasu and it has even been enforced. I was tested at the ramp. Passed and I have straight thru transom with nothing. Stock 6.2. Big, and bigger, blocks can't pass without mufflers, but even with they are significantly loud. My boat is loud, but rarely out of place there. Not to say that it should be allowed even though I am happy it is...

KY has a max db level it dock/marina levels. Never heard of anyone getting a ticket. mine would be much louder without mufflers. Buddy on the same dock has twin 502's with straight pipes, he pushes his boat out of the slip before he fires it up. The slips are covered and firing it up under cover is really bad. He even shuts it down and pulls it back in, nice to see more folks with respect for others.

Actually most states have similar laws, it's something most LEO's over look unless they need a reason to make your day go downhill fast or the locals start complaining.

Agree, as above KY does have the db level but I don't know what it is. Use to have a Law Enforcement Officer that would write up folks for anything and everything. He was a Department of Natural Resource (DNR) officer. He lasted about 3 years before he was transferred to another state.

Kevin, how bored are you in Indiana?

while we are on the subject.......why not simply get the folks at BOSE to come up with noise cancelling transom speakers

Only moderately bored. Been keeping busy with a project on my dually BUT VERY much ready to be floating again!

I'm tellin ya guys.... My system WOULD work..... It's the seizure clause... nothing motivates an owner like fear of having his/her property seized and nothing motivates a law enforcement agency like the chance to seize a cool new toy..... we'll even add a clause that they can keep a certain percentage of the boats they seize for law enforcement use.

Why is people who move next to the airport and complain about the noise get told "you knew airplanes were noisy before you moved in, dummy", but people who move next to water where they know noisy boats play get sympathy when THEY whine about the noise?

just sayin' ... ;)

C'mon Smoke! We need another level of bureaucracy and an excuse for Gov. to seize private property? Do you have cabin fever?

I'm not a noisy boat owner however I do have an upgraded sound system which sounds great. I'm respectful, especially while anchored next to someone while swimming.
Every once and awhile their will be a $300K+ multiple big block, go fast boat tearing it up on the St. Croix. However it being so busy in the Summer, if I was buying a house or cabin there, I would expect the noise.

BTW - Please don't mess with Havasu. I have fond memories of my early 20's hanging out in Copper Canyon before I moved to the Frozen State. What's the saying; "It is what it is".

Respectfully,
Ollie

I do almost all of my boating there these days, and I have to say everyone can find something to love about Havasu. This time of year it is so wide open, and so few boats, and spectacular scenery. Quiet, and mid 70's on most days. You can get lost, or go to a nice dinner by boat. A wonderful lake where you just need to find your time and place. Sorry for the hijack.
