wow! excellent work! how did you like working with the teak sealer? I'm fixing to be in the market and would like to hear how you liked working with it. Awesome project, excellent attention to detail.

The teak sealer was really easy to work with, penetrates very quick ad well, just make sure any glue has fully cured before applying the sealer as it could ruin the bond. appy, let sit 15 min and wipe off excess, let dry overnight then it is ready to go.

Super nice woodwork!

I'm wondering: What's the most efficient form of fuel? Plain old wood? Charcoal like you'd use in a barbeque? Steam trains and big ships used coal, but I don't know if that's practical with such a small engine. I'd think coal would be pretty difficult to light initially.

wood will be my fuel of choice, but coal works well. if soft coal is used there is no ignition problems, but hard anthracite would be difficult.

we are talking a 6-8 knot boat here,

Darn, and I thought we were all being invited for a bit of tubing ;)

Beautiful craftsmanship - it will almost be a shame to get her wet!

I'm surprised Jas hasn't started a "Which is better, OB-I/O-Steam" thread.... yet... :)

This is my new favorite thread!

Thanks for the kind words! I got the boiler lagged and banded this weekend, and finished the flexible trim. I got a start on the piping as well. I used white oak for the lagging, with a layer of aviation firewall liner underneath, good to 1000 degrees. The white oak was already cut into strips and glued to a fabric backing, as it was made to use on roll-top desks. I just cemented it to the liner and used a variety of hole saws and a jigsaw to cut the openings.

I've used the material you're talking about a couple times (called tambour), but I used it for roll top desks. What a mind you have, I'd never thougt of using it for a wrap of a steam boiler. Looks great. Can't wait to see a picture of it operating in the water. Take the video camera with ya and post the video. This one is a must see.

If you don't mind me asking, what are you going to do with it when you're done? Keep it or sell it?

Hi Bret, Now you have restored two internal combustion SCs and a steam powered launch. What's next? An electric boat? Can't wait to see it...

I agree with cadwelder, the use of materials like the aircraft heat barrier and rolltop hardware is very impressive and creative.

Very nice work.:)

Looking forward to seeing a video of this thing in action, very unique.:D

As a man that makes steam for a living I must say that this project brings a smile to my face. I had never considered this aspect of boating before, but now I may just need to build myself one. Great job on the build and I eagerly await your next update and the first splash. Man, that thing is going to be awsome.
