I knew of a guy that a had a brand new Saturn a few years ago and he hit a rock and needed a new control arm. He had to wait 3 months for the part but I guess he did get it as some stuff seems to just be unavailable. It’s crazy.
I saw vid not long along of a guy that bought a wreaked cyber truck as salvage and it was going to cost him close to 80k to fix it and
months for some parts to be available He just took the loss and parted out what he could.

Dealers make money on keeping them running. So do good independent Auto repair shops. So do the bad shops. Your job is to find a great one near you.

car companies want you to buy new cars, trade every 3-4 years. And please, finance with them also. Banks love it also.
Plus harder to DIY, you need that bi-directional scanner. I'm speaking for us DIY'ers who keep our cars....and try to help others.
Youngers are not interested in fix'n anything as compared to our generation. We are dwindling.
I have a good independent I can trust if needed (we have mandatory inspections in Pa. so I need that) . But he has trouble finding techs that wanna work. Prior to him, 2 previous indies closed up.
My '08 silverado has like 30+ modules talking to sensors and all talking to the ECU. My '02 camaro has like 14.
I do have a new '25 toyota, has like 24+ modules, but my scanner only can access like 14 of 'em. I have the base model so maybe that's why. But I've heard manufacturers are eliminating access unless you have a prescription.

Advance auto parts closing 100's of stores.


oh, and finding that genuinely nice 70's , pre computer truck? One that can handle what my '08, extended cab, long bed can do?....the ones I've seen?

I turn my own wrenches, always have. However when even the dealers can not get parts you have to get creative.

As I stated prior, my next truck will be built. 1967 GMC 20 or 30 cab stretched to 3 or 4 doors, Cummins and 6 speed from a ram 3500. Custom chassis.

I don't think we're complaining about all the technology necessarily.
It's just that as a DIY'er, we/I see the legitimate pitfalls coming.
I got it though. If someone wants or doesn't mind perpetual monthly transportation costs, it's irrelevant.

I have saved myself untold multi thousands (tens of?) of dollars DIY with my cars, boats, bikes, houses. Not to mention the security of having dependable transportation due to consistent maintenance.
This also bleeds over to money saved when an issue develops on the road.

I've been a tinkerer and a fixer as long as I can remember.

The display on the truck is acting up again, starting to miss my 2021
Constant "loading tomtom" with split screen, but press Nav button and it goes full screen and works fine. No actual buttons just a touch screen is a safety issue

I think I was around 8 years old when I got this for xmas.....I still remember that you had to wind the wire 300 times around each armature.

One kit I had you could "grow" your own amoebas.....I guess I didn't pick my nose after handling it, my brain didn't turn to jelly.

so...got a message in my 2012 volvo saying bulb failure low beam. Both low beams were out though. Hmm. So go to check fuse....there is no fuse for headlights. Ok..go to find the relay. There is no relay....now it's wtf .
so, to the Volvo forum. Turns out that the main computer, the CEM, controls the headlights. The high beams worked, just not the lows.
And the previous gen. volvo S60s had just such a problem with the cem/headlight circuitry.

turns out, both low beam bulbs were bad at the same time. Unless there is an underlying problem causing both to fail, the problem is fixed...time will tell.
but this illustrates the main topic of this thread....and why some of us aren't so enamored with this new computer stuff.

I learned to drive long ago.---No sensors in the car because driver had the common sense back then.------I hate the " high tech " features that are big $$$ to repair.----If you hit a moose or deer it can mean a " write off " of the vehicle.

Gateways that require you to pay extra to run a scan like on Stellantis vehicles 2019 & up. You pay for the scanner, then pay for the subscription for it, then to get past the gateway!
