Right now we’re having a large issue with cameras. Brand new vehicles with 1-5000 miles with cameras coming in electrically dead.

If only the auto makers would take heed of customer desires instead of using social engineering to push tech few people really want to push profits.

a failed backup camera can kill the whole CAN/LAN, which can take out HVAC, infotainment, start control, window control, etc.

and in 3-5 years those cameras will be NLA

Ford just issued a recall for 1.5 million vehicles for backup camera issues, a few hundred thousand for lighting issues, and a few hundred thousand for cracked tail lights.
Ford has an issue with the lane assist sensor in the rear tail light. that little $1500 tail light will leak water and take out the entire CAN network which will cost the consumer $5k to fix.

GM has the 6.2 engine recall and a few class action suites on the transmissions.

Both ford and GM have issues with the 10-speed trans

give me a manual transmission, manual transfer case with a diesel, manual window, radio delete truck. I will take the $30 seat toaster elements however. kind of hard for the auto makers to screw up a seat heater element and PWM control

Battery sensor won’t set a code if it thinks the battery is discharged, only if the sensor is electrically failed. The reason start stop doesn’t work is because it detects the battery is discharged or not up to capacity.. it either is a bad battery and the sensor is picking it up or the sensor is throwing false readings. Both are common. If you go into live data on the ECU on a scanner you can see the battery capacity as a percent. Anything below 80% in normal cases is suspect to do a full battery diagnostic. I’d expect a new vehicle to report higher than that

It's not the battery...It's not the sensor. It's the algorithm.

Ford's been having issues for years with water in their taillights. And they're still having them ?...jeez.
Girlfriend's son had a 2014 F150, bulb shorted out due to water, a lot. Surprised me.
Dealer quoted like $300-$400 or more (can't remember, but was ridiculous) to replace fix.
So I drilled a 1/8 hole at the bottom back, new bulb....done.

and there are all kinds of "devices" on top of my battery in the new car. Rumor has it that when I go to replace the battery, these devices can detect whether or not the replacement battery is the "toyota" battery?...time will tell.
But this isn't unknown. My son went to replace his '04 Prius 12v battery a few years ago, using another brand. No matter what, it would not keep a charge. And we know how to test batteries, so it wasn't a bad battery. So we gave up and reluctantly got the $200+ "toyota" battery. No problem since.
BS.

I know stellantis has most of their current lineup recalled due to fire risks in some capacity. I've seen a few buildings go up from it.

Fun story, I have one of those GM class action 8 speed transmissions and so far... its been one of the best slush boxes I've owned.

I'll add in though for manual transmissions, a dislike is forced skip shift. Thats some BS I don't need in my life.

when you replace a battery in a 2012 volvo, you have to have vida/dice or a capable scanner to reset the battery monitor. If you don't, then the system may not charge the battery appropriately.
BS again.

and I thought I'd heard that the GM 6.2 owners lost that class action suit.
or was it the 5.3 AFM suit. Or the tranny suit. Can't keep it straight.
I'm wary of my '08 silverado's 5.3 and the AFM. Also the 4 speed automatic.
fingers crossed.

well, me neither. Stumbled across it on toyota nation a few years ago. Set it aside in my memory cache. Then my son, independently, tells me his problem. So we do all the trouble shooting we can. I then tell him what I read months earlier. So he bites the bullet and gets the toyota...if memory serves, $250 ? .....fixed.
As a side note, the 12v battery in my 2013 camry hybrid, with over 152,000 miles, is still going strong. (sold it to my other son in august).
So there's that. I never got the chance to test the allegation.

That is true on most new cars with smart battery management (BMS).

My 2015 F150 requires a reset.
Don't need a scanner to reset. Can be done by putting vehicle in “tech mode”

BMW started it with having to reprogram the charging system for a new battery in the 00s. Actually most of the stupid crap we have now that makes me scratch my head is from the Germans. No dip sticks. Lifetime fluid fills. modular one piece headlamp assemblies...

I was thinking about selling my 90 4Runner but after reading all stuff I think I might be better off keeping as old reliable. She has never let me down.

Scott, you give them too much credit! ;)

I'm with you except for the radio delete. I wish the EPA and all of it's ridiculously restrictive anti-diesel laws would dissolve so we could return to mechanical diesel fuel pumps. At least there's no major short supply of them out there... right now that is.

Factories build what people will buy.-----New car buyers are not worried about repairs on all the " high tech " stuff.----New car buyers love the gadgets and bells and wistles.------Now those on a budget just want a good engine and drivetrain along with the basics.----Some off the high tech is nothing but " distracted driving " to seniors.
