New to Boating, is my local dealer WAAAAY overpriced?

OK, I know there is a bunch of Bayliner haters out there, but I just can't afford more than like $15k financed (approx $200 mo) and since I'm new to boating have a small SUV to pull it and have a small family I think the 175 Bayliner will be great.

Anyway, I have been researching online and the online pricing at dealers out of my area is right on par with the MSRP that Bayliner lists online. But, I just went to my local dealer to check em out and they are priced at $4000 over MSRP!!!

The basic 175 is listed at $11,620 at bayliner.com as well as some west coast boat shops. My local Bakersfield dealer is saying $15,700 before fees, delivery, prep taxes etc.

I believe in keeping $$ in the local community but these prices are crazy.

Another thing the local dealer said is that they will not do any warranty work if I don't buy from them. I have bought RV's before and went out of town for significant savings, then got the warranty work done locally by a RV service place but not by the local dealer that sells the same brand RV.

Do boat warranties work the same? What I mean is, during the warranty period if something goes wrong, can I take it to a local Boat Reapair place and have them bill Bayliner for the work?

Thanks for any insight as to whether my local dealer is just marking these up like crazy.

PS I have been looking online at the used boats, and I have found a couple 2004/5 175 Bayliners down in LA area for like $8000. I guess I could also look into some other used boats in the $12k range. That would keep me around my $15k pricerange, but with no warranty.

Financing is not as easy on a used boat either. There are other inexpensive brands out there as well. Visit all of the dealers in your area. You may be able to find a great deal on a 2007 model of a higher priced brand. Stingray comes to mind........

What that dealer told you about warranty work is bull! If they sell Bayliner then they are required to do warranty work on any Bayliner. I think i would give Bayliner Corporate a call! Who is this dealer?

First of all, sounds like your local BL dealer is smokin'some stuff. what a way to sink a deal, for 15K you can do better than that, due to gas prices & this economic funk were in, boat dealers are finally on the rails and are willing to cut deals to lower inventory, go to as many dealers as possible, don't talk about how much $$$ you have to spend, ask about boats in the 19 - 22 ft range, i would check out Tahoe Boats, its an entry level boat, better built than Bayliner & its priced as an inclusive package, got a ProBass outlet around you? they sell them. But forget any dealers who upcharge on MSRP. These guys are HUNGRY, use it to your advantage.

Re: New to Boating, is my local dealer WAAAAY overpriced?

Glad to hear I'm not the CRAZY one. I know my eyes just about popped out of my head when he said $15,700 for the basic 175 with zero upgrades.

There is a Bass Pro down south in Rancho Cucamonga (approx 2-3 hrs).

What do you guys think of Reinell? We have two local boat dealers, one has Bayliner as there entry and the other Reinell.

There is a Spring Boat Show in Pomona (2-3hrs away) June 5-8, I may try to drag my family down there for a look. :)

I also thought that if you were a Bayliner dealer, you have to do the Warranty work. Just like my Weekend Warrior dealer. The local WW guys were pricks so I went down south and saved $5k. Then whenever I needed work done, I COULD have taken to my local WW dealer, but I just took it to a local RV repair place where I got great service and it all fell under warranty.

.. your not, he is. boat shows are a great place to see a lot in one area. you can also ask dealers at these shows for lot inventory of closeout models or last years stock. you can save huge money and still get full warranty and funding.

good-luck

Hmmm, can't seem to find a corporate #. My dealer is Galey's in Bakersfield.

I'm not surprised they are expensive, they have a lot of overhead to pay for in that nice new building. They have shows on the weekend around that big fish tank in the middle of the store. And I wish I had 10 cent on the dollar for what they spent on the decorations. Quite a place.

Hello hotwls13!

I have been to that boat show in Pomona. When I went there they had some really nice Tournament Boats and on the last day of the show they were wanting to discount their boats a bunch to get them sold. If you can get pre-qualified with your insurance before you go to the show, you have got the power stroke on these guys, especially the last day. One strategy would be to find something you like on the last day in the morning then cruise back towards the latter part of the day and say I am pre-qualified to buy one of your boats right now. I am a cash customer. But I want a good price. I want ____% under MSRP and I want it straight of the production line. AND if you know of any accesories that are additional that you like ask them to through in one or two of them.

Be prepared to walk away and don't be to anxious. If your really in love with a particulay boat at the show and their not willing to make a deal with you, give them your address, web site of Email and say I will give you another couple of weeks to accept my offer.

Hope that helps!

I think you got this mixed up. My dealer is Galey's here in Bakersfield. Someone had mentioned tahoes and that Bass Pro has them. I said the closest one is in Rancho.

What do you guys think of the Reinell? I am seeing ads online for there 19' 191 for $180 a month. I wonder what kind of financing they are using. It is definitely a nicer boat. It has tilt wheel, trailer brakes, 6cyl, extended platform and I really like the walk through in the back.

That pricing sounds about right. The price on the Bayliner website is the base price. Add Bimini top, hull color stripe, stereo, steering wheel upgrade and destination charge it brings it right up to about what they are asking. Make sure you check to see what extras are on the boat. On the Bayliner pricing site click on the options to see what is charged extra for over the base price.

Ummm, no, the $15,700 was on the Base 175. It was white, without any upgrades. No blue stripe, no bimini, no stereo etc. Plus the salesman said that was the price plus dest, tax and fees. They basically added $4000 to the MSRP and went from there.

When I mentioned Olympic boats down in Newport (they have them listed at MSRP online) he said, they wouldn't be able to touch there prices, but that I would have to travel to Newport to get service and Warranty work done. He told me a story where some guy went down to Newport, bought a Bayliner then brought it to him like a week later to get some stuff fixed (probably the typical stuff you find on your maiden voyage) and he told the guy to drive 3hrs down south. I know it is probably frustrating for the local dealer to have to work on a boat he didn't sell, but it's there own fault for being greedy.

I had the local Toyota dealer try to do the same thing recently on a Camry purchase. I did my research and found what Camry's were selling for down south, then tried to get my Toy dealer to match. He basically said if I could get a written quote he would match. So that's just what I did and the next day I bought a new Camry locally at the price I had originally offered.

The local dealers act like Bakersfield is an island and that we have no other choice. At least the Toyota dealer wanted my business enough to match the offer.

That price is way over MSRP. I just purchased an 08 175 with the family fun pack (Bimini, radio and graphic) plus bow/cockpit covers and a depth finder installed for 15.5k out the door. Sounds like he may be the only game in town and trying to rip you off. His tactics wont last long, the market is slowly drying up and he will be sitting on a lot of stock and need to get rid of it.

Yep, that's what they should cost. Just curious, what is your tax rate?

As for tactics, that's just the stealerships are around here. All of them. I always go in know what the best price within 300 miles is and they all say (no way will you get that deal, I want to see it in writing). There just must be a lot of people here with more money than sense.

I guess I will skip the Tahoe's.

I would have just lawyered up. A friend of mine had a similar problem on a All American 37' 5th Wheel. His frame was cracking near the axles after a year of use. He lawyered up right away (even though his warranty said basically the same thing that they had the option to repair). After a few months of letters and claims by him and his lawyer, he ended up with an apology and a Brand new longer triple axle as a replacement. I doubt they recalled them or anything but basically it came down to too much stress on two axles and that particular model should have originally been built with 3 axles.

Run down to Mexico where they are making them now..your close enough.
Call Bayliner...out the factory door..how much?..on a pick up ready to go. Why mess with middle men, adding a couple grand easy. And any Bayliner dealer will do the warrenty work...they are REQUIRED! ..to honor...just keep a paper trail....
