Not trying to burst your bubble, but now that you have a starter, check the compression on that motor so you won't get disappointed on the lake. It'll sound great all by itself, but once you put a load on it...good by power. We had that problem with a V4 Johnson...only 2 cylinders were firing. It sounded like a top in the driveway, on the lake...7mph.

Not bursting my bubble at all, I wasnt even expecting it to turn over! I still need to get a compression tester, but im not sure if I will be able to access the 4th spark plug bung easily, as the casing is in the way. Thanks for reminding me red, tis the reason I post here! w/ out everyones help, this boat would still be in one peice.

Today I can now say there is 0% wood in the boat at the momment. Next week sand, week after get and cut wood, week after start setting and glassing.

Stay tuned!

Generally speaking, the upper cylinders are going to be the ones that give you the troubles in compression numbers vs. the lower ones anyway, so concentrate on those and compare the numbers at least on the top 3 using the lowest one as your base number. ( top cylinders get less oil -gravity and all that )

Yes I do, its nice to be in the building phase on the boat, was getting really old takin stuff out. I need to cut out the bildge and the old fiberglass that was holding the old stringers in, then i can glass in the transom. This transom again is wierd, but the old one was holding even when it was rotted, so Im going to keep the same design. (Its wet because I hosed out all of the dust from sanding/grinding):

Probabaly wont have much more to show for a few weeks, I am a bit low on cash and the next stuff I need to buy is glass, resin, fillet, yada yada.

Cya all soon!

Re: New to iBoats with my 71 Glasstron

i would personaly leave the glass in there and then use a bolt through the glass, into the wood and then to the other glass,on the stringers, then glass over them. but i guess to do it right, you can cut the glass off at the floor. and get your stringers in yourself, but make sure there straight!

that transom looks good by the way. i left that plywood piece that goes down in there. it looked like it was decent shape. but again, i wasnt going for full resto. i was looking more for fix-up to get it on the water.

Beleive me, thats what I was looking for too, and after each little thing was taken off to replace, i found more and more that was completely ruined. It came to a point that I told myself "all the wood is coming out and getting replaced.

It looks like the factory didnt fully glass a lot of the wood too, so be careful of that photographer'

In order to get a good bond, I need to cut out the entire bildge well to sand down the gel coat thats on the glass. I am not looking forward to doing the stringers... They are the next victims to cut, along with the front brace.

Anyhow, im down for the night.

eh, it wont be bad. if you've ever worked with glass, its not hard at all but it its sometimes fun when you start trying to move quick with it and you get it on something.. watch the leg hair [ from experience]

i'm looking forward to seeing this one being started. i was in your same position not to long ago so i'm curious to see how you'll do it!

Did you end up replacing the stringers and the deck? What type of wood did you use for the stringers?

Re: New to iBoats with my 71 Glasstron

i put treated 1x4's in but i didnt glass them , they fit perfectly into the old glass so i just put them in there and made the laterals from ripped 1x4's

then a deck of just 3/8" regular plywood then 1/2" plywood with good coating of thompsons water seal on it. then laid it down. I'm going to glass it tothe sides of the boat so the water will run to the back [hopefully]

Re: New to iBoats with my 71 Glasstron

Wood is now bonded to the transom! Had a little bit of time and money to pick up some supplies to get this portion done. I used a fillet (stranded FG) to bond the wood to the transom FG. Was a messy job, as I had a little working time from the mixture, and I will have sanding to because of it ;-). Next I need to bond in the bow brace, glass it all in, then ON to the stringers!

There is probably a real name for it, but on our boats MrPhotographer, its the piece that goes from starboard to port right under the seat/storage in the bow of the boat. Its a vertical piece of plywood that is about 4 ft long, holds the seat up. I'll take a picture after i put the new one in. May be a couple of weeks.

Re: New to iBoats with my 71 Glasstron

Negative, im talking about the piece that the center stringers joint up to that supports the seat/storage area at the bow.

I am concerned about leaks and line up w/ the live well as there is no way for me to check for water under that section of the deck, so I am going to patch that hole and do away w/ that live well and ill be using it as storage. This will also give me a completely solid deck w/ no holes from bow to stern.

all kinds of ideas that I have... waiting for the cash flow to continue the project.

your local marine store should have the brass tube, and if your lucky, they'll do it for you, or let you borrow it for free to do the install. just make a block to go between the hull and the livewell and pack it with marine sealent silicone as you pull it up.

and i didnt floor the whole boat. so i can acess under the livewell
